Is there such a thing as a usb to firewire converter? And if so, would it enable me to boot from and external usb drive (converted to firewire, of course)?

Nope, don't know of any of those either. I think that the FireWire spec is just too different from the USB spec to have any kind of simple converter, unlike USB and serial/parallel devices (USB->parallel, USB->serial, etc. all exist).

Of course, I'm just kind of speculating on all this -- I still haven't heard of any FireWire to USB (or vice-versa) converters.

I think you're right. I've searched all over the place, but a guy's gotta ask.

An external firewire case for you hard drive would be a lot cheaper and easier solution anyway.
