I tried that, quitting the relevant applications and reopening them... they appear to the left of the big space, and any new menu icons do as well. For example, if I were to quit and reopen Dialectic, it would show up all the way on the left. The problem here is that these icons often get hidden...

Okay, I shall do that and get back to you. There's nothing wrong with the printer as far as I know. It's worked almost flawlessly for many years, and it would work now if the software were working properly. Definitely a serial cable, then. Not using any adaptors or anything.
