    Apple Hardware Test Error Code?

Thanks for the link, which was informative. I hadn't thought to search there for the actual error code. I'm going to take the HD out again and test it in another computer. It may be the HD pixies allowed it a last breath of life to let me get the data off, then let it die. I rather hope so...

    Apple Hardware Test Error Code?

Trying to resurrect an iBook G4 that wouldn't start. Local AASP diagnosed a bad hard disk, but when I took the disk out and tested it thoroughly, it passed every test (and since I discovered that this AASP had left out several screws, and left the rest loose, when reassembling the iBook, I...

How to correct incorrect dates on files & disks?

Thanks. As a 20-year Mac user I'm more familiar with ResEdit than with Terminal, but I'll try this sometime. Be nice if someone would make this into a GUI utility.

How to correct incorrect dates on files & disks?

The one thing I truly miss from the otherwise unlamented Norton Utilities of the classic Mac era is that it would fix incorrect dates (created, modified) on files, directories, volumes, etc. Such incorrect dates (1904, 1976, etc.) would occur when the computer's internal clock reverted to its...

Where does QuickTime cache files played in browser?

Thanks again, I'll look into these. The TidBITS article looks like just the ticket. Andrew Main

Where does QuickTime cache files played in browser?

No, these streams are about the only media I listen to these days. I'll check it out next time I come across a QuickTime/WMA audio stream. I'll try this some time too. Like I said, I did a Finder search for all visible or invisible files over 25MB and found nothing. And I made all the...

Where does QuickTime cache files played in browser?

Thanks for the tip, billbaloney. That does seem like the logical place, but it's not there. I checked the size of the ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime/downloads folder before and after downloading the stream, and it was 4.5MB both times. I also did a file search for 25MB+ size files, including...

Where does QuickTime cache files played in browser?

Thanks for your response. I've looked in ~/Library/Caches/Safari, and find 15 folders, ranging in size from <1MB to 2.2MB. I know the hour-long stream that was downloaded is about 27MB in size, so it doesn't seem like it could be in one of those folders. Unless the cached file is somehow cut up...

Where does QuickTime cache files played in browser?

I listen to 1-hour long radio shows streamed via Flip4Mac (.wma files) through QuickTime in Safari. A progress bar indicates that the file is being downloaded, so it must be stored somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. I note in QuickTime's Preference Pane, Browser tab, is a setting...

    700MB CD-R in 10.4 = 670MB in 10.3?

Thanks for the suggestion; I'll check it out. Too complicated, though, for my friend who's just trying to make a copy of a disk image I put on his computer. Looks like the problem is something funny about how 10.3.9 makes a CD in the Finder, somehow losing over 30MB of space; but it appears that...

    700MB CD-R in 10.4 = 670MB in 10.3?

When I insert a 700MB recordable CD in my MacBook Pro (10.4.8) it tells me there's over 700MB of space on the disc. When I insert the same blank CD in my iBook G4 running 10.3.9, the space on the disc is suddenly under 670MB ("Available: 660.7MB"). I have a CD with 684MB on it that I want to...

How to start an Intel Mac from first HD partition?

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for. As I understand it, pressing X is to startup in X when OS 9 is on the same partition (see for instance here). What I want is a quick way to switch to Linux on an Intel Mac. On my iBook G4, I have Ubuntu Linux installed on the first partition, so I...

How to start an Intel Mac from first HD partition?

Some years back I read (in David Pogue's "Missing Manual") that pressing the D key during startup would force the Mac to start from the first partition on the hard disk. I found this useful when I was switching between OS X and OS 9; with OS 9 on the first partition, I could leave OS X selected...

How to save Flash presentation to disk?

Thanks, that does indeed download the main frame -- which plays in RealPlayer when double-clicked -- but not the rest of the presentation. Perhaps someone has a further suggestion? Nice site, BTW.

Main menu: Help; "Mac help" does not function.

OnyX is a gem; I'd forgotten that it can reset Mac Help. OnyX's Help (rather poorly translated from French) doesn't specify which files are removed by its Reset Mac Help command, but I suppose it would be easy to check against the instructions on the X Lab page.
