    Root can't receive email; /var/mail/root

Not 100% sure, but I'd check /var/root/.forward It forwards everything to dev/null. Mike

Sendmail errors in system.log from startup

I can start sendmail by hand just fine after boot, but during the boot, I find the following error messages in /var/log/system.log Apr 5 22:06:22 zimmy sendmail[226]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR: putoutmsg (NO-HOST): error on output channel sending "451 4.0.0 fill_fd: before readcf: fd 1 not open: Bad...

    emacs colors?

So I at long last have emacs on my Mac :-) Anyone have any luck or prognosis on how/when we can get context-sensitive coloring working (ie. fontlock or hl319)? Given that the simple emacs -bg black -fg white has no effect, I'm not sure I'm too optimistic about the built in version...

    Sendmail

One further thing I found I needed to change was in /etc/rc.boot hostname yourhost.domain Sendmail still does not start at boot, but I can launch it and now receive mail to my username. So that is good progress :-) Mike

    Sendmail

First let me say that I greatly appreciate the replies :-) Can you supply the format for an entry in the local-host-names file? Mine currently is at 0 length :-) And looking around at the various *nix systems to which I have access, I can find no example to go by. So you are correct...

    Sendmail

Ok, making progress :-) I had to make sure /etc/mail did not have group write permissions. then following your advice I did sudo domainname dyndns.org sudo hostname my_dyndns_subdomain sudo /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q1h & and I could finally telnet to port 25. Fetchmail was then...

I'm trying to scp a file, and am getting the following error message... (tried against 2 different remote systems...) Write failed flushing stdout buffer. And no file as a result. Thanks for any help/confirmation of the same problem. Mike

    Sendmail

First question... is the definitive test that one can telnet to port 25? (using 127.0.0.1)? ie. if your ISP blocks incoming port 25, will that be a local loopback before it can get blocked? (I'm assuming yes). Ok, what I have tried so far from tips I have seen.... - I have done a chmod...

    Dyndns (ddclient) success

I think I have ddclient working under OSX. You can get the source at http://burry.ca:4141/ddclient/ With a mess of sudo's etc, I installed ddclient into /usr/sbin and the conf file in /etc/ddclient.conf I had to change the "if" option to use en0, not eth0. then I went to the login...

BSDToday lists BSD packages ported to Darwin...

Thanks! Sorta like cpan for perl then? Ok, can someone give a quick list of these BSD apps? (ie. what I am missing by not doing this, what will I gain by it?) Are these BSD specific apps, or just an efficient way of installing apps that have already been ported to BSD? ie. I haven't...

BSDToday lists BSD packages ported to Darwin...

Not being a BSD guy I have potentially a silly question :-) Is this a BSD port to run, or simply a collection of BSD utils? (I couldn't find a list of what was contained in this package). Thanks, Mike

    what about perl

Go to the command line and type >which perl That will tell you the path to perl (I'd tell you, but I'm at work right now). Make sure that path is correct on the first line of your perl script. As I was hunting around the Apache install last night I noticed that in the cgi-bin...

    Where are C libs?

    I'm trying to compile elm and when I run Configure I dump out after getting the message ........... I can't seem to find your C library. I've looked in the following places: /usr/lib /usr/ccs/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/lib/large /lib /usr/lib/386 /lib/386 /lib /lib/large...

    how to build ssh2

Nevermind, got it working. Used NetInfo, but after that was able to kill and restart from console. Had to edit /etc/sshd_config to disable rootlogin. Prob not a good idea that is on by default. Mike

    how to build ssh2

I got the SSH from versiontracker. How do I get sshd running? It says it can find a key file (I think). Looking at the man page I didn't see an obvious way to generate one. I also tried launching it via sudo. I ddidn't find any doc with the distrubution. Thanks for any help, Mike

Using 'root' as primary account name

As a follow-on, you have to erase that partition before reinstalling osX or it finds your same user/password and is still hosed. I've done that and now have it working. That applications would not launch under the other way is still amazing to me. What a gaff. Mike

Using 'root' as primary account name

I just encountered the same thing and so logged in here to make sure I wasn't crazy. I couldn't even find a Startup Disk to execute, so I stuck the 9.1 CD in to switch back to my other partition... yeesh. Going to try again with a normal user-name, but I had seen a suggestion to start with...
