Afterthought - worth checking that RAM involved is 'proper' RAM - it's been noted before that this may cause problems. If needs be strip Mac to what it came with and add again afterwards.

Nice one - ta. I also note that if you wanted to make (say) Acrobat the default for .pdf from (say) Preview, OS X also counts the creator type in it's MIME lookup - consequently, changing the default app for a file that is already showing an Acrobat icon will NOT change the file association...

Hello. I have in the past, automatically installed the MS UAM for OS X - this gives some options on the fly without having to edit .conf files. I couldn't (bizarrely) find on the MS site, but it full title is 'Install MSUAM for X.pkg'. A google may help, alternatively, (since it's freeware)...
