having problem connecting with a router

OK, what's not working, we need more details to try to trouble shoot. So lets start from the begining, are you getting the info from dhcp (it should fill in your ip, netmask, and gateway)?

OSX is eating my web broswers!!!

Hmm, maybe Apple is taking a page from M$ and making sure that Safari becomes the "preferred" browser on OSX ;)

    OSX.3 and mapped drives

   This issue is a MASSIVE pain in my side. I regularly connect to different networks and if I mess up and forget to disconnect a share then life gets immediately bad. Not only does it take forever to timeout (and sometimes it is forever, like this morning, I left it for...

having problem connecting with a router

You go to "system preferences" -> network, make sure you are on the "tcp/ip" tab, and select dhcp from the "configure" drop down. Click "apply now", after a quick pause, you should see the information filled in for you. The value that gets put in for gateway is the same as the router itself...

having problem connecting with a router

He shouldn't have to know the gateway's ip address if he's using dhcp (can you even enter it if you have dhcp chosen?). He should just set it to dhcp and that's it, the rest should come from the dhcp server itself (the router in this case). He can then point his web browser to whatever was...

    Latest 970 Rumors

Perhaps component video for the group of 3? Other Macs have had svideo so this doesn't sound toooo far fetched. They mention 4-8 memory slots, which implies that the connectors being mentioned could either be on the mb (pin connectors) or external? So maybe the other 2 are SerialATA? Or...

    Force IP

Perhaps this has something to do with the recent changes in iTunes ;)

    I have a little problem

Here is an article that may sway your decision (or not) ;) ::evil:: :p ::evil:: ::angel:: ::evil:: ::love:: ::evil:: http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/5961191.htm But I agree with Trip, show us some piccies so we can, uh, give you better advice, yeah, thats it.

    Force IP

Could it be that iChat has a persistant connection to the chat server and when you manually change the ip (even if it's the same), that all current connections are severed? And are you remembering to also put in the netmask, router, and dns entries when you switch to manual (I can't remember...

Help setting up a Mail server!!!!

I would strongly recommend against hosting anything yourself, esp. if you aren't really sure of what you're doing. The reason is that even now, even though things aren't working the way you want, you still are getting the emails, even if you have to massage them by hand. If you point the MX...

    hardware interface

They're all programmed differently. There are two issues, programming the interface and programming the device. Things like MP3 players will interface either with USB or Firewire. So first you figure out how to talk to the interface (check the Apple dev kit docs), but then each device will...

    1984 or Brave New World?

Basically the development effort is to port Quartz (since Darwin is already ported). The effort to support the various hardware configs falls upon the device drivers. Usually you get the manuf. of the device to write the driver. Apple will probably be forced to do some of this themselves...

    Building a wireless mac network

The airport is a WAP (wireless access point). The Netgear is a WAP as well. They both are also internet routers that offer features such as NAT and DHCP. The advantage the Netgear has over the airport is that it also has a four port switch built in. The advantage is that if you have other...

    itunes 4.0.1

Just to clarify, it removes the ability to share with those that are not on the same subnet as you are. So theortically you could still share amongst those with the same ISP. And there's probably some tweaking you could do at the tcp/ip level to make it happen as well.

    1984 or Brave New World?

Actually you point out one of the most important distinctions when talking about Apple going 'x86', are we talking about simply building a Mac around an x86 processor (and keeping the proprietary MB and firmware), or are we talking about targeting beige boxes. Because if we're talking about the...

    1984 or Brave New World?

I think many "common" folk who buy a Mac do so because it is presented as a superiour "solution", i.e. hardware and software. If OSX were available for x86 and other manuf. can also ship custom solutions around it, then that would hurt Apple (imagine Dell selling a couple of configs targeted...

    1984 or Brave New World?

Considering that software (that's ALL software, not just OSX) accounts for about 7% of Apple's revenue, I think that saying their hardware sales will take a hit but that is a good thing is way optimistic. A four fold increase in software sales wouldn't come close to matching a halving of...

I did it! Bill would be proud! - My 2 cents

In what way is slo not open minded? He had to get something done, the Mac was not the best solution, Wintel was. He has a very valid point (and so does mmartian in a way), often times any negative comments about the Mac coupled with positive comments about Wintel leads to criticism, not based...

    1984 or Brave New World?

So then you do not subscribe to the theory that coming out with a beige box version (important distinction between a beige box version and simply an x86 version) of OSX would destroy the market for their own hardware (and thus their primary source of income) and at best leave Apple competing...

Alternative Ideas for unused phone wall plates

Replace them with something translucent and turn them into night lights. Maybe even stick motion sensors into them so they'll automagically turn on when someone enters the room (this is all assuming that they're attached to wiring boxes). Of course you could do the obvious and paint the...
