This might interest you as well, allegedly a 256MB bottom slot module can be used if it is a special chip layout, I can't scource any of these in Australia as my usual memory suppliers won't touch it. They claim they are unstable or not reliable. Unfortunately I can't find a link to it right now.

None of the iMacs have any onboard memory. If you have a tray load iMac you can easily upgrade its memory to 384MB by putting a 256MB high profile in the top slot and a 128MB low profile card in the bottom slot. The tray load models have a second slot under the processor that is not...

    My Dilemma

Even though there are four drive bays inside the g4 you will need to install either a scsi or ide card to use the other two. There are only two ide controllers on the board. One channel for two hard drives and the other for cd rom and zip.

    [FAQ] - Cleaning LCD Screens

sorry about the length of this post. The majority of the exterior of a portable computer is plastic, except in the case of the PowerBook G4. The idea behind cleaning is to protect and preserve. Cleaning though can have consequences as well. For example if abrasive materials and cleaning...

like others posting above I have found that memory is good and swapping your drive for a 7200 rpm model is almost as good as adding a hundred MHZ, do not use a small amount of ram and a drive with no space as the virtual memory will kill your hard drive in a week.

    Preventing booting from a CD

You are correct, you can reset the open firmware that way. If you are worried about security then remember that once someone can touch your computer they will be able to do what they want to it. You can encrypt your drive but if you have a crash kiss your data goodbye as a recovery utility won't...

    where is iDVD?

one thing to remember for the future is that new computers don't ship with installer cds for itunes, imovie or idvd. When you use the restore cds then the application is copied over as part of the restore.

10.1 Install CD won't boot on beige G3

To install 10 on a beige g3 computer you will need the apple ide cdrom that comes with the computer and you will need to set the jumper on the back of the cdrom to master not slave. This is an issue with the beige g3 and possibly the rev1 blue and white also. I have installed a few of these...

    LCD iMac coming 2002?

If such a thing as a flat panel iMac is released it may as well be called a different style of laptop. If you pack the electronics behind the screen then you have a very thick flat panel. The logic board and components from laptops will keep the space requirements low.

    firewire to SCSI question

Purchase a pcmcia firewire card. They work well and will do what you need. You could also purchase a g3 upgrade for your PB 1400, that will be the only way to make it fast enough to run X. You will need to track down the shareware file that lets you install on unsupported hardware.

Looks like no G5's in January

My opinion is iMacs need to go to g4 processors because X runs so much nicer with a g4 than it does with a g3. The speculation of new g4 and/or g5 processors could mean just that if we can assume there are new processors of each type arriving first quarter next year, iMac with a g4 and the...
