Do you have a spare hard disk, firewire HD or even an iPod to try booting from? The fact that it won't boot from the internal HD, but will from CD points toward a disk (or disk controller) issue maybe? HDs are so cheap now, it's worth grabbing another one anyway :-) Good luck!

Well, I've never been so glad to discover a hardware problem! Even though I'd run memtest etc many times (sometimes for more than an hour) with no error, I'd never (until today) actually been on site when the freakiness (lines in destop background and menu bar, file corruption) was happening...

It sounds like your "red, white and yellow plugs" are RCA, or phono connectors, and the Apple site says the adapter will "connect to your TV, VCR, or overhead projector's S-Video or RCA (composite) cable" so it seems your excuse for buying a flash new tv is hosed. Cheers, Alex.
