Trouble networking OSX and OS9 machines

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish, but here's some points to consider. OS 9 has an owner (which when you connect over the network) see the whole hard drive. Other users created in user&groups see only what they are allowed to based on the permissions you've assigned...

    text crunching help

grep and awk are the two command you want, I think. I don't know what your file looks like, but grep will return any line matching (or not matching) a search term. *************Example file********* 12/4/01 Joe Schmoe <jschmoe@nowhere.com> unknown user denied 12/4/01 Billy Bob Bares...

OS 9 and Netare (Not OS X)

Mac users have been pretty upset with performance of Netware under OS 9. Compared to a windows computer- it's pretty depressing. On a low end machine (G3 ibook and a Windows 300MHz running XP), a 15MB file copies in 30 seconds on the mac and 15 seconds on the PC. With higher end machines...

mail problem (NOT Mail or Mail.app)

I'm no sendmail expert (who is), but I just commented line 81 out and made the directories not group writable and all seems to be working well enough... >>From Sendmail.cf Cwlocalhost # file containing names of hosts for which we receive email #Fw/etc/mail/local-host-names hth Todd

    8500, need to...

With a G3 card, you could run sorenson broadcaster. Then watch live video from any quicktime machine on the network. I've got a VCR plugged into my beige G3; now I can watch live TV from anywhere on the network!

    DNS Caching under OS 8/9

Thanks for the reply D- The problem lasted about 2 days even with several restarts. So I guess we know how Apple handle's it's caching... I'm not sure how to get around the problem next time though... For my users, two days without email is a major problem. -t-

    Networking three Macs.

IP is generally prefered. It should be a little faster. As for reliability, not that much better. One thing to be aware of, if these computers are just configured to be on their own isolated network (we're not talking one machine has an Internet connection), then they may be using IP...

    Two Screen Savers

I have a question- I'm looking for a way to use the images in my pictures folder as a screen saver- and also to have a scrolling marquee as the screen saver. I'd like both at the same time, but that doesn't appear possible. How about just the marquee then? I love the use of the pictures...

    Explorer

It shouldn't crash that much- I'd suggest that you trash some preference files- I bet one of the is corrupted somehow. If that doesn't resolve the problem, then you should reinstall IE- perhaps some kind of Java support or Javascript support is hosing when you visit a site- or memory leak...

    DNS Caching under OS 8/9

Hi- users here connect to our mail servers by conneting to username.mail.wesleyan.edu, where username is thier logon name. This way, we can add/change mail servers when we want to without reconfiguring the user's computers. However, the macs seem to be trying to connect to the old servers...

    Terminal Activity

Hi- I'm just finishing a Kiosk station using OS X and IE. anyone can come up to this computer and use IE for whatever. I've got a PERL script run through cron that watches the IE History file to determine when IE was last used, and if it's been longer than 3 minutes, kill IE and reset the...

    Cron Not Starting on boot

Double-check that cron is running. by default the 'ps' command only lists your own processes. type ps -aux to view all processes on the system. You may want to pipe it to more. ps aux |more hth -todd-
