Why Does Firefox Take SO Long to Quit???

When an application, any application, takes an unusually long time to quit, the reason is usually that the application isn't done doing something and it needs to conclude its business before it will quit. So, make sure that FF isn't 'involved' with anything when you quit. Turn off all RSS...

The reason for the 10.5.7 non-release

I suspect that would be correct. Apple has contracts with big purchasers not to abandon models for three years. The last G5 model that was marketed will fall outside the three year range after the summer is over. So, if one believes that OS X 10.6 will abandon PPC support, an Autumn release...

Kernel Panics, Mac OS X 10.4.11

Check out: Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060911080447777 Troubleshooting Kernel Panics http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392 The first thing that I would do is to shut down your Mac, uninstall all...

The reason for the 10.5.7 non-release

Just another data point. I have an Intel-based 24-inch iMac that has been fully updated to OS X 10.5.7, and it still shows the incandescent (not the florescent) bulb. I didn't use the combo updater for the latest update; I used Software Update. So that may be at least a partial explanation.

    log files piling up!

Have you tried opening one of these files with a text editor, like Tex-Edit Plus or BBEdit, and seeing what is in them? Their contents might give you a clue as to why they are being created.

G4 issue - booting Leopard from external drive

If it is convenient for you to get it for me, and you saw a link given to that quote, I'd love to have it. This comes up fairly often, and many users won't believe something unless you have a citation. I've heard about there being a firmware update from LaCie. So it might be worthwhile to...

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

Check out these folks: PowerBook Guy http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/index.html Look in the upper right on their homepage to see quotes for different types of repairs. Their prices are quite decent and they do the work overnight.

    Viruses On Os X

Well, it *can* be spy software, if you use it as spy software. By the way, there are other key loggers for OS X. They aren't anything that is rare, new, or unheard of. In fact, software for OS X designed for parents to spy on their children isn't uncommon either. This isn't considered...

    Viruses On Os X

Yes, it is for OS X. But *no* it isn't a "virus" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus as it can't self-replicate. In fact, you really can't even call it "malware" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware as a keylogger isn't necessarily malicious, nor is it necessarily used against...

How do you recover deleted files?

There are no *free* data recovery programs that are as easy to use as the commercial ones. There are some free UNIX utilities that must be used from the command line that may work for you. Photorec can recover deleted .jpg & .mov files. It's also capable of recovering other types of deleted...

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

Good! Thank you. I was just concerned that some folks might misunderstand the original post by Satcomer to mean that YASU interferes with Software Update and/or that they should be afraid to use YASU frequently.

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

Well, first, I think that you should let him speak for himself; especially when you say that you haven't read things carefully. Second, my original understanding was the same as yours. I just wanted to clarify things for others. But then this was his response to a quote of what I said...

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

I wrote to Jim Mitchell, developer of YASU, and this is what I heard back from him: On May 14, 2009, at 1:18 AM, Randy B. Singer wrote: A user on the MacosX.com discussion list is saying that YASU (the System Cache setting) blows away his receipt files and causes Apple's Software Update...

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

You should talk to the developer of YASU about that. I suspect that something else is going on, not necessarily related to YASU at all. YASU isn't designed to do that. http://jimmitchelldesign.com/contact/

    Advice needed on repair/maintenace utilities

I like and recommend YASU also. Partially because it is easy for ordinary users to use, partially because it doesn't have any dangerous features, partially because it is free (a donation is requested), and partially because Jim does a great job a staying on top of Apple's latest undocumented or...

    Rebuilding the desktop in OSX

That is done automatically under OS X. See: http://www.macattorney.com/tutorial.html Item #41 (This site is for OS X 10.2, and is now mostly out of date. I haven't heard anyone complain of a problem with generic icons under OS X in years.) No, I believe you are referring to defragmenting...

The reason for the 10.5.7 non-release

The biggest difference that I've noticed so far with 10.5.7 is that running Disk Utility/Repair Permissions is drastically faster! In fact, it takes just a few seconds! Is it the same for others?

Turns on to a please restart screen

When it says, "please restart" does it look like the picture on this page?: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392 if so, it is a kernel panic. Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem, such as a cheap USB hub, bad RAM, or some other peripheral that your Macintosh is not getting...
