You probably set up a limited user account for your child so he/she cannot modify the computer. You'll have to upgrade the account to Admin to be able to move files.

Not sure about finding out why, but there's a great app out there (besides the terminal) that will help you control MySQL's on or off state: XAMPP. It's free and works great.

Sounds like you need to simply use .txt. RTF format or doc format can inject weird characters that can give you errors you're experiencing. Have you tried Google Docs? You can work on docs collaboratively and even export to doc format (or txt, rtf) if you need to.
