    Icq

ICQ used to be really frustrating for firewalls. It didn't have any set port that it used, and opened up a random new one on a different port for each person you talked to. This meant that you have to open up close to a thousand ports in your firewall, or at least did. You could force it to play...

Ev Nova Is Going To Be Released Today!!!

I quickly "tested" EV Nova (two more finals, dang it), and everything worked fine. It was a copy off of my iDisk, although it possible that yours was somehow corrupted. To quickly check if it did, open up the Terminal, type openssl md5 and a space, and then drag the EV Nova.dmg file onto the...

Ev Nova Is Going To Be Released Today!!!

You can get it on your iDisk, under Software/OS X/What's New, or something like that. There's also a link to it on http://osx.macnn.com . I've only just downloaded it off of my iDisk, so I haven't tried it yet. But man, do I want to...freakin' finals.

What shareware apps have you registered?

I've registered Exile II, QuickTime 5 (I guess it counts as shareware. I registered it so I could have the same kind of functionality I had back with QuickTime 3. That, and being able to get the full-size trailers for Episode II is a nice touch.), and OmniWeb. The next thing I register will...

    help with fink ... please

Could you try one more time? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I actually think they fixed the Fink package very recently. Before I posted my last message, I checked the package and it was indeed trying to download a non-existent package. Just to be sure before posting though, I did I fink selfupdate...

    anyone using a trackball?

I've been using the Kensington Orbit for the past four years or so, and have very few complaints. The only real problem I have with it is the lack of a scroll wheel. I could really do for one of those. About once a month I have to clean it, which is what I was having to do with my roller ball...

    Skins or Program

Or, more likely, it's "Walk On" by U2, since every other song is from the album All that You Can't Leave Behind. As for the first question, as far as I know the MP3 player that came with the Public Beta and DP4 doesn't come with OS X. I could search my PB CD for it, but I honestly can't say...

    Icq

It's basically as unsecure as these message boards. If you're looking for security, I would suggest registering with ICQ and then using a different program to connect with it. Or, don't send those plans for the nuclear power plant and the detailed directions as to where you hid the body on ICQ...

    help with fink ... please

Yes, just read my previous post. You just need to update Fink's info files. I checked, as of 12:15 AM on Friday night, everything should be fine.

    help with fink ... please

The problem, as you may have guessed, is that the source code for one of the packages that mc depends on appears to have moved. What happens is this: the packages that tell Fink how to download, compile, and install Fink change are constantly being updated, and so it would be impossible to...

    proteus

I have absolutely no idea. I've thought of running Sniffles to check and see, but I haven't yet. I would guess that it does, since that seems like a heck of a feature to build in otherwise. The last I checked the help, which was admittedly in v0.29b (but that had the translations too), it didn't...

    proteus

Another cool thing about Fire is that you speak from either English, Spanish, Italian, French, or German, and that the other person speaks one of those, and if the two are different, it will translate between the two languages for me. Granted, everyone I talk to speaks English as their native...

    proteus

While I like Proteus better, in its defense Fire can now get the contact list from ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and AIM.

    proteus

I use Proteus as my main chat program. For a while I was using Fire again (I used to use it back when AIM and ICQ weren't out for OS X), but the latest version of Proteus has definitely got me. My only real beef with it is that, since 1.5 is a rather big update when it comes to its...

    AIM Command Line Client

I've never tried it, but my best guess would be to connect to AIM with a Jabber client. There are a couple of command-line clients at http://www.pipetree.com/jabber/sjabber/ and http://imcom.floobin.cx/ that you'd have to compile yourself, since I haven't heard of it being done before.

    AIM f-ups

Check out this link if you want to try some other chat programs. I haven't used it in a long time, but Adium should be quite nice and does just AIM. Fire is what I am currently using and it has a lot of cool features. Version 0.30b ought to be coming out "soon". Proteus is great, too, but it's...

    Mozilla Questions

You know, Ed, I'm beginning to wonder how many of those 2176 posts you've made have been links to that one post. It saves everyone time, but it might just be easier to put that in your signature. ;)

    Fink install

What method did you use to install Fink? That is, did you install it with the standard installer, or did you do it through the Terminal? The problem right now is Terminal.app doesn't know about Fink yet. I'm going to guess that you haven't finished setting things up. Check out...

    Longest Uptime??

Like I mentioned in this thread, there's a place that'll keep track of your uptime. The real fun part is watching all the Windows machines drop like flies. And hey, 87th out of 155 ain't bad, either.

    Interface Builder w/AppleScript Studio

I would have replied, but I haven't built anything in AppleScript Studio that uses a progress indicator. I'm also subscribed to the AppleScript Studio mailing list and this came up in it, but was pretty much left unresolved. The only suggestion that came out of it was to make sure the indicator...
