    OpenOffice

Heh.. I agree, most of the software from the 'free software' movement is not in fact free. Of course it depends on your definition of free, but if the definition extends past money, then the words of jwz ring true: linux is only free if your time is of no value

    sound static under 10.1

So I just did a clean reinstall/reformat/general cleaning up of 10.1, and I'm sitting here listening to some itunes radio and copying a huge file from an nfs share to my local drive. static in the audio all over the place! if the contention was with the bandwidth on the nic, I'd be getting...

    bus error with 'open' command

    that's the one :) [think:/Volumes/space/src] oliver% otool -L /usr/bin/open /usr/bin/open: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit (compatibility version 45.0.0, current version 617.0.0)...

    bus error with 'open' command

same here.. if I could remember the syntax to nm I'd see which dynlibs it's trying to use, that could well be the problem..

    bus error with 'open' command

    bus error with 'open' command

So the 'open' command is a good one, from the command line you can open things in the finder or start applications. It's much like the 'start' command in windows. you can open a file, application, or directory and up it pops in the finder. Unless you're running 10.1! I tried it today to find...

    sound static under 10.1

Ah good call.. I only have the 4.1.8 update, but the 4.1.9 update was pulled on the 1st due to some sound issues (heh).. good idea though.

    sound static under 10.1

Strange, under 10.1 I get frequent audible static while playing mp3s from itunes (from disk or stream). It also seems to happen sometimes when I switch apps, and am doing other things in the OS. Anyone else getting this problem? I haven't tried a different player, but since it seems to be...

    Virtual Desktop Pager for OSX?

It's true that real virtual desktops would require digging into the display server, but the managed show/hide of application sets that space.app gives you does the trick to some degree.. Real virtual desktops would be nice though, and should be pretty simple to put in (by apple). I only wish...

    Virtual Desktop Pager for OSX?

maybe. hopefully. <wishful thinking/silly rumor> maybe apple bought nriley out and space.app will be in osx 11! heh </wtsr>

    Virtual Desktop Pager for OSX?

Man, space.app rocks, but hasn't been updated for ages. There are still many features I'd love to see (like having different ie windows on different desktops), but alas.. we'll just have to wait until someone updates it (it's on sourceforge, so whoever wants to update it go ahead!).

    formac proformance3?

well I just called again and was told by a tech support person that formac is exiting the graphics card market, and osx may or may not be supported in the future. GRR!! those bastards.

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

No, no I'm not :) Performance-wise, I can't tell if there's a problem, but that's because I've got a more modern system (dp450/1.4gig ram).. I hadn't tried it with a g3/500! And as far as divx avi's go, we can play them with the jamby codec, but sounds is still screwy because of a...

although yes, I agree that the mpeg decoder could use some more optimization :)

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

heh.. I actually did a bit more testing and I'm now more convinced it's a threading issue :) I opened the tomb raider sorensen trailer and a 3ivx movie. started one, tried the menus. pretty fast, but still not up to the non-qt player standard. I started the other as well, and the menus are...

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

I think you're right on the money. It might actually perform better at playback using the cooperative threading model (when there are no other events) because it can grab more of the cpu slice given it by the preemptive scheduler.. but I'm not sure how carbonized it is, I forget how to check...

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

sure, why? it plays just fine fullscreen, while I have itunes doing visualizations in the other monitor. no slowdown whatsoever in qt, although the itunes vis has a pretty slow framerate :) works like a champ.

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

dude I just tried again, no problem. I can drag the window around (it only plays fullscreen when first opened, after you hit esc it's in a window). and it sounds like your beef is with the qt player, not necessarily qt.. qt rocks, which is why it is now the reference standard for mpeg4...

QT and 10.1 major speed problems

I have the exact same system except with more ram, and I have the problem you describe, but I don't think it's a biggie.. I'm playing my mpeg movie of an nfs share, and yes, while in quicktime the menus are a bit slow, but I think it's fine cause how often do you have a movie playing and you're...
