Have you looked at the Console for system messages while these apps try to boot? This should be located at /Applications/Utilities/Console.

The application "Installer" should recognize and open .pkg files. Installer is by default located in your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you don't see it in the "Choose Application" list you're referring to, you can choose "Other..." from that list and find the application yourself...

Are you saying that Firefox wrote cookies to that file? I haven't heard of that behavior. I thought that FF only knew about its own cookies.txt. Perhaps someone else here has experienced this.
