    EMERGENCY! Can't get mail!

Also worth considering Textdrive, which since becoming part of the Joyent crew has started to offer bundled packages to make developers happy. Dreamhost has great packages for the money, but have had stability issues over the last year. Just a caveat. I haven't experienced any problems with...

    Software not opening!

Have you looked at the Console for system messages while these apps try to boot? This should be located at /Applications/Utilities/Console.

No default application for .pkg files

The application "Installer" should recognize and open .pkg files. Installer is by default located in your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you don't see it in the "Choose Application" list you're referring to, you can choose "Other..." from that list and find the application yourself...

    nytimes cookie

Are you saying that Firefox wrote cookies to that file? I haven't heard of that behavior. I thought that FF only knew about its own cookies.txt. Perhaps someone else here has experienced this.

    nytimes cookie

Look in ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist and see if you can find it.

You could probably also use Cleaner.

You could also look at Chronosync, which has been recommended elsewhere on this forum.

    password protect external hard drive

That looks like it's a Windows app. I don't have any other suggestions, but you might want to read this thread.

    Dual JS image randomizer?

Here's an adaptation of your code that (a) makes the JavaScript blocks valid XHTML and (b) expands the array to include an associated image and background image that can then be written out somewhere. It sounds as though you're using table tags, so the background gets written as part of a TD...

    tomcat status from shell

Did you ever figure this one out? Something like ps augx | grep java | grep apache or ps augx | grep [some part of the directory where the binaries are installed] should work fine. You can also look at the catalina.out log to see if the last lines refer to a shutdown. tail -n30...

change the way double-clicking works re: selecting text ??

That's true of all versions of Safari, I think, when you're highlighting displayed (HTML) text.

Which Network Attached Storage (NAS) for the Mac?

I have read good things about the QNAP TS-101 as well, although I have no personal experience with any of these. Of course, the best solution is still generally another Mac on the network -- thus the predominant use of XServes as file servers.

change the way double-clicking works re: selecting text ??

You can also double-click and Option-Shift-[left or right arrow] to highlight by word. Applications can override the default OS X behavior (see broken behavior in Microsoft Office, or augmented behavior in BBEdit). Sunnz, which step in fryke's description doesn't work? Surely highlighting works.

    Mac Web Query

You'll need to provide more information for anyone to help. For instance, the query. Excel sometimes perceives parts of a page, or an entire page, to be a table. But AFAIK OS X Excel 2004 behaves much like recent versions of Windows Excel w.r.t web queries.

    HELP osx.3 missing driver/won't start

If you can't get the machine to recognize key commands on startup, then you have no way of influencing how the machine starts up. One additional question: any dead ports (USB, etc.) on this machine? Those can trip up the logic board. One old standby is to reset the PRAM, which means holding...

    How much does it take...?

Re: coverage, my point is not that external coverage of US politics is biased (for surely, internal coverage is often more biased), but that these stories of the slow shifts in middle America may not make great waves outside our domestic news sources. For now, at least. The broader view of...
