Edit /etc/smb.conf to make /Users/Shared a Windows accessible, group-writeable public folder by adding these lines: [public] writeable = Yes path = /Users/Shared guest ok = Yes Then restart the samba daemon to register the change: sudo kill -HUP `ps aux | grep 'smb[d]' | awk ' { print $2 } '`

Is there any way to get Outlook Express Windows email into OS X Mail.app?

Qualcomm just released a better OS X Carbon version of Eudora than their last attempt. It makes for a very handy tool to have in your cross-platform toolbox for converting mail, address books, etc. http://www.eudora.com/products/eudora/download/mac_osx.html

Can I make the dock more transparent?

I think this will get you pretty close (using a combination of two effects). Requirements: *Clear Dock (from Unsanity) or *Transparent Dock (from Free Range Mac) and *TinkerTool (from Marcel Bresink Software-Systeme)

Is there any way to get Outlook Express Windows email into OS X Mail.app?

On the PC, just run a find for *.dbx files (Outlook Express mail database files). It's not difficult to locate them or move them over. Eudora is a free download away. Netscape Mail would also do the trick, if you prefer that option.

In other words, don't touch /System/Library/Fonts (or anything else in /System, for that matter). Feel free to dump any fonts in /Library/Fonts or /Users/yourusername/Library/Fonts.

    [HOWTO] Install pure-ftpd

You may have to get a new shell to realize the new configuration. Apart from that, you can explicitly add /usr/local/ to your path: setenv PATH "${PATH}:/usr/local/bin" And you may want to add these two environmental variables permanently to your ~/.tcshrc or ~/.cshrc file (whichever is...

From Outlook Express PC to OS X Mail ?

For a mere $59.95... It does appear that Move2Mac is a more complete solution, but in this case it may be overkill. Eudora Lite and Netscape are both free downloads, so if monetary concerns are paramount, you may want to follow my advice above.

    IPFW Rules

Borrow Brickhouse's startup script and use that configuration. It makes life very easy; then just append your rules to the /etc/firewall.conf file and it will apply them at boot time.

From Outlook Express PC to OS X Mail ?

On the PC, you can go from OE to Netscape Mail, then bring the files over to your Mac (via SAMBA or FTP or CD). Then import the Netscape Mail files into Mail.app. Alternately, you can bring your .dbx files directly over from the PC and import them into Eudora on the Mac and rename all of the...

Is there any way to get Outlook Express Windows email into OS X Mail.app?

The hard way is through the Eudora middleman (import OE mail to Eudora, batch rename Eudora .mbx files to .mbox, import into Mail).

    trash emtying terminal command

The beauty of his script is that it will force empty the trash (as root) on all volumes. If you have a 'stuck' file that the Finder won't delete, this will take care of it. Also, it is much, much faster to simply type 'trash' in the Terminal and enter your admin password than to empty a trashcan...

    trash emtying terminal command

Did you look at the script and see what it does? It empties all trashes on all volumes in one sweep (with root privileges), as well as getting rid of the cosmetic glitch of the Finder showing a full trash can despite it being empty. It is much better than simply issuing an rm command.
