I don't know if it's possible to change that behavior... I would type "about:config" in the URL bar and see if there is a config parameter that looks like it might change the behavior. Please note that changing some of the parameters can cause major problems!

Have you tried the Windows Media Player for OS X from Microsoft? That should play most of your AVI files. However, if the files are encoded with Codecs that are simply not available for OS X, then there's probably no way to play them.
