Auto upper case first character on line-not wanted

I believe it's a feature of Lion -- you may also have noticed that holding specific keys down now doesn't make them auto-repeat, and, instead, brings up a menu of alternate characters (much like on the iPhone and iPad). Some users report that TextExpander can be responsible for this. Are you...

My friends can't see me on iChat

On my computer, Messages replaced iChat. What happens if you configure Messages and log in there? Do you not use Messages at all, in favor of iChat? What happens if you uninstall Messages completely? http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/how-to-uninstall-messages-and-restore-ichat-to-mac-os-x/

Are you going to buy the next-generation iPad 3?

My boss is in the same situation -- he had me pick him up an iPad 2 when I stood in line on release day + 1. His wife didn't understand the allure behind the iPad, but he loved it -- checking company emails from the couch, taking it on business flights to get some light computing done on the...

Are you going to buy the next-generation iPad 3?

Well, I didn't stand in line this time around, but I just left the La Cantera Apple Store here in San Antonio with a shiny, new 16GB black AT&T 4G iPad. Screen is amazing. The weight difference is only slightly noticeable. The difference in thickness (~1mm) isn't noticeable at all. The iPad...

MacBook Pro (late 2006) screen buzzing?

Yep, backlight is dying. It sounds like simply the fluorescent tube is on its way out, but it may be something more sinister like the peanut-butter manifold ingestimator (or some other electrical component within -- like the "inverter" or something). My guess is a new bulb. Older computers...

How do I "mount" Time Machine Volume?

Copy the entire DMG file to a local drive. Then mount it. Some NAS drives have both ethernet, and some kind of local connector as well (eSATA, Firewire, USB). It seems yours does not, so that option is not viable.

How do I "mount" Time Machine Volume?

Any way you could do one of the following: 1) Copy the Time Machine backup to a local disk on the computer you're trying to use to browse the TM backup 2) Connect to the WD NAS to the computer via some direct-connection (USB, Firewire, etc.) instead of over the network

Lion -- cannot move desktop icons

Deleting the Finder preferences didn't help. Took the step of removing the Desktop folder from my account from another admin account, logged back in, and everything works great now. Strange problem, since I'll probably never be able to track down the exact cause. Thanks to all.

Brand New Macbook Pro 17's on ebay ??

You might want to contact the seller directly and ask them those same, exact questions. There's no harm or shame in asking someone to validate that what they say they're selling is actually what they're selling. Expanding on what MisterMe said -- retailers of Apple gear do not get breaks...

Lion -- cannot move desktop icons

All new user accounts work correctly, as they should. Just mine doesn't. By deleting the .DS_Store file, I was able to get my Desktop to remove the prohibited ("no smoking") symbol, but the actual results are the same -- icons simply snap back into their original place when dragged. I've also...

Lion -- cannot move desktop icons

Hmmmm... I may give that a try. In the interim, anyone see any issues with the screenshots I provided (permissions, etc.)?

    Mac OS X "Mountain Lion"

Should be able to. You've been able to do this with just about every Mac OS X release thus far, save for one version or so (maybe Tiger wouldn't let you do an "upgrade" install from Jaguar or something).

Lion -- cannot move desktop icons

Taking a screenshot with command-shift-3 does, in fact, add the resulting .png file to the Desktop -- but those resulting file icons are not movable. I can delete them, though (either by dragging to the trash in the Dock, or pressing the "Move to trash" hotkey [command-delete]). I cannot...

    Windows 7 VM on Mac

Windows is commercial software, and is unobtainable for free. There is no way to acquire Windows without spending money. With that being said, you can purchase Windows online (they ship to almost every country, I believe -- unless you're under extenuating circumstances that disallow you to be...

Lion -- cannot move desktop icons

Strange problem. 2009 Mac mini 2.0GHz, Mac OS X 10.7.3 (fully up-to-date). I cannot rearrange my desktop icons. When I try and drag them, there is a white "not allowed" ("no smoking"-style) symbol beside the cursor while dragging. I just noticed now that screenshots no longer work via...

    Crop images with automator

Yep, Photoshop Actions should have a checkbox option for "include images in subfolders" or something to that effect... Not sure if Droplets and Actions are similar in that regard, though, or if there's any difference at all...

    Mac OSX with Parallels

Simply uninstalling Parallels may not actually remove the activation of Parallels from your computer, so Parallels is simply using the old serial number activation that you previously entered. If the serial number you used previously was legal and valid, can you explain why what you're...

    Crop images with automator

Automator may not be able to do it, but Photoshop's "Actions" definitely can. http://www.republicofcode.com/tutorials/photoshop/mass_resize/ Many, more complex examples exist -- but this may get you going in the right direction.

I'm receiving emails of every new iCal event!

So switch to Linux. Problem solved. If you're going to beat your head against the wall, nobody's going to want to listen to you complain about your headache. Looks like a lot of people are frustrated with this "feature": https://discussions.apple.com/message/17414459#17414459#17414459 While...
