How do you know if Quartz Extreme is enabled?

I have an iBook 600 with an ATI Radeon 16 MB on it. I figure it's enough to run Quartz Extreme, but I might be wrong. Is there any way if enabling Quartz Extreme if it is possible and if it has already been enabled, can anyone tell me how I am supposed to know? Andre

Any way to make xterm NOT open when opening X11?

I like x11's speed and the fact that I can now EASILY install the Gimp. One thing I'm wondering about is whether there is a way to either remove xterm from opening every time I open X11, or run the Gimp directly without having to go to X11. Lemme know! Andre

How to install 10.1 on new iBook (Nov 2002)

Actually, I bought my iBook on November 1st 2002 and I know for a fact that 10.1 will install on it. You can try installing in either of two ways: 1) with the Mac OS X CD directly, 2) with the System Recovery option. Personally, I prefer 1) because it's faster and doesn't have the strange...

Jag mail has destroyed my home folder!!

Ugh, bugger off with your clean installs. I bought a Mac to get away from the clean install garbage, not to experience it a second time around. My own Jaguar was installed as an upgrade and I have NO PROBLEMS. Andre

I have a scratch on the lcd screen of my iBook. I thought it was a dead pixel but it's a scratch instead. Is there a liquid or something that can be used to reduce the appearance of the scratch? Andre

Ebert plugs Mac in movie review

I know for a fact that Ebert is a Mac user. I read an editorial from him in a Mac magazine a while back where he talked about his trusty old typewriter and how he migrated to a Mac. He was definitely pro-Mac. I guess he might hate Windows from seeing people use it at work all the time. I was...

Need ideas for making video game...

I can give you a bunch of ideas if you're looking for a puzzle game. However, if you're absolutely looking for adventure, not only would I give you an idea but I would write the story for you. I write stories all the time, have been published (anonymously) so I know what I'm doing. Of course...

    Silence of the Macs

I use an iBook 600 myself and find it to be the quietest computer I've ever owned. I think even the TI994A from the late 70's was louder. But the fan DOES kick in every so often. I dunno what fan but A fan. Plus as beautiful as the computer is, it gets scratched very very easily on the outside.

MSN launches at startup; how can I stop this ?

Easiest way is to go into the preferences of MSN messenger, go to General, and remove the checkmark from Run This Program When the Computer Stars. I'm getting the feeling that's how it is in OS 9

    Defraggers that DON'T need boot?

I have PlusOptimizer and I think it's a great defragmenter, but I was wondering if there was a native OS X defragmenter that doesn't require a boot CD? Also, is there anything that doesn't take hours upon hours to complete a defragmentation? Andre

Is there any way of reinstalling iChat?

I regrettably removed iChat from my computer after falling in love with Fire. Now, I kind of wish I still had the option to use iChat. Is there any way of reinstalling it? You can't download it anywhere and it's not even an option from the CD. Thanks. Andre

Best OS X Web Browser? Question?

Personally, I think Safari is garbage. I don't care what people here think. When Apple's supposed flawless browser can't log onto bank account, school records or even Hotmail, it's not good. Besides the bookmark system in Safari is pure garbage regardless of what Steve Jobs says. When the system...

    Mozilla without Mail?

Of all those browsers, Mozilla is the only full-featured browser. Remove the mail option from it (who uses it seriously when Mail is available?) and it's the best browser. Speed it up like Chimera, and suddenly it's the greatest browser in history.

    Mozilla without Mail?

Is there any way to install either Netscape 7.01 or Mozilla without installing all of the junk that comes with it? I have a preference for Mozilla, but I don't even want the Mail program to be there. Andre

    Chimera programmer feeling way down...

Chimera is honestly the best browser on the Mac. Safari is unbelievably bad, I don't care what the fanboys say. Put 'accept cookies originating from server only' and better support for video (better support for windows media and real player) and you'll have the best browser in the world frankly...
