iMac SE DVD Drive not working

Well, I had figured as much. And given the value of the machine, I don't think I'll be plunking down that kind of cash for a new drive. Fortunately, I only bought the machine the other day for $20, and I guess I'll just use it as an internet terminal or something. Or, if anyone wants to part...

iMac SE DVD Drive not working

Greetings, I recently purchased an old iMac DVD SE. (400MHz G3, slot-loading Matshita 8184 DVD drive.) When I first powered on the computer, it had many problems. It wouldn't boot, the screen was all out of alignment, etc. Now I've fixed most of the problems, and I'm on the last one...

Securing Mac OS X Tiger from immature college kids

That's what I would do - very simple. You can also do things like locking the desktop folder for that user, and, as you noticed, change user parameters.

    Quick Safari Question

As far as I know, there isn't a way to do that. You could print to a PDF, and copy the portion you wish to print into another PDF... That's all I can think of. It's a commonly-requested feature though, so I expect it'll be added if it hasn't been already.

Demystifying the iTunes EQ and Sound Enhancer

I was curious tonight as to the inner-workings of these parts of iTunes, so I dug in with some tools, and wrote a little article on my web site about the details. You should be familiar with words like "EQ", "Distortion" and "Compression" before you read this article...

    ServerAdmin.app and Apache busted

I'm not a big fan of most GUI config tools, and here's an example of why: When I try and add "sites" to apache, everything appears to be ok while I'm editing the new config, but when I return to the "sites" part of the apache config, all the sites are gone (that is, none show up). If I click...

    DVD Sudio Pro Blues

I'm not in-front of my mac with dvd studio pro, but I have a suspicion... Every scene in a dvd project contains a record which states where to go next. If you select the scene, look in the inspector (usually in the lower right of the screen), and check the popup menu. Sorry to sound so vague...

Steve Jobs Skit on Saturday Night Live

Didn't tuck his shirt in, hair, glasses all wrong... But it was cool to see, and Tina sure is hot. Now if only they'd do one about the vendor lock-in that gets me shelling out $129 every year for a new version of OS X.... I guess that's to be expected, and they are getting better with...

I'm using it because this is what the client has choosen. I wouldn't choose it for anything. vhosts are now stored in standard apache config files, but that nasty gui app sure makes a mess of them.

Just Acquired a 68K Mac? Do a Double-Take Before Making a Big Mistake!

A friend of mine that works at a rather popular resturant chain was allowed to take home their old computer system when a new one was brought in. He didn't know much about computers other than that he wanted one. So he took the server over to my house, and I booted it up. To our surprise...

    FTP won't work!

For starters, I *am* able to connect to your FTP server. I first need to know about your internet connection. I don't need to know what kind of computer you have, but I do need to know how it connects to the internet. If you have a router, I need all the details about that. I would also...
