    10.1.3 Observation....

I just noticed something else odd in 10.1.3: when you drag icons within the Dock they move to the correct location but the smooth animation isn't there anymore (like when you drag icons in the Mail toolbar). It's no big deal since everything still works properly, but is everyone else...

iDisk, the horror and the pain...

Thanks JJJ!!! :D :D :D I wouldn't say the AFP access method is blindingly fast, but at least it makes iDisk usable again.

iDisk, the horror and the pain...

Is it possible to use an FTP client like Interarchy to access iDisk?

Classic Apps Barely Communicating on TCP/IP

I had the same problem with Outlook Express and Newsgroups. I say "had" because I just stopped using OE in favour of Mail and I never went into Newsgroups much. Another similar problem I had was connecting to Bank of Montreal's secure banking site. They will only support Netscrape 4.x on the...

    Microsoft Intellimouse Drivers for OSX?

I read this post recently: http://www.thinksecret.com/features/msmousex/ As with any rumour site, take the info with a grain of salt.

    That stupid 'nice' hack

I posted this link on a different topic, but it applies here too: Renicer This shareware is different, because it gives the frontmost process more priority (as opposed to just the Finder or Dock). I've been using it for about a week now (I set it to run at Start-Up) and experienced...

    Windows Media player

There were a couple of things I had to do, but I now have the player running/launching as it should: 1) Delete the player AND PLUGINS for the classic version (so, yes, it seems you have to choose, you can't have both) 2) In the Protocol Helpers of the Preferences panel (in IE), add "mms"...

    HotSync: Unexpected Error [22]

I finally got the HotSync to work. All it took (I really should have tried it earlier - d'oh!) was changing the Connection Settings in the HotSync Manager for the Keyspan port from 115200 to "As fast as possible" and it worked immediately! :)

    Virtual PC Speed?

I use VPC to test Web sites (and for Morpheus, of course!). Today I read about shareware called Renicer that specifically addresses Connectix's problems with preemptive multitasking by changing the process priority of the frontmost app. This makes a NOTICEABLE improvement in VPC's performance...

    HotSync: Unexpected Error [22]

I've installed the 4.0b77 version of the new Palm Desktop and EVERYTIME I try to HotSync the Conduit Manager launches but I get a dialog box that says "Unexpected Error [22]". I have the following installed: Palm Desktop 4.0b77, Mac OS X (10.1.2), Keyspan PDA Adapter (USA-19)Driver 1.0.1...

    iPhoto problems (Permissions related?)

Problems fixed thanks to these 2 items over at Macfixit: 1) Read-only media remains read-only? Not unexpected perhaps, but Jeramia Ory found that "importing from a read-only medium (in my case Picture CD's) into iPhoto results in photos that can't be edited. Copying the pictures to the hard...

    iPhoto problems (Permissions related?)

I downloaded iPhoto on the day it was announced and haven't been able to get certain features to work: 1) The crop function doesn't work at all: I can select an area but hitting the crop button only removes the selection without actually cropping (no error message is given). 2) I'm in...

    OmniWeb and CSS

Try these tests in OmniWeb (4.1b1) and IE (5.1.3): Child Selectors Test Adjacent Sibling Selectors (I found them here: A List Apart: New Mac Browsers) They really don't make OW look too good...

What do you do for a living?

I'm a Web Developer, who'll do just about anything else too if it's interesting work. My current project is a corporate video to go out in 2 resolutions for web (http://www.aaam.abnamro.ca/en/newsletters/index.asp) and also as CD-ROM. I got to shoot (Canon ZR20 DV camera), edit (could iMovie...

    Aqua Inconsistency

OK, OK, OK! :) As I said at the start of this "I'm open to other points of view." The more I think about it, the more I agree that this behaviour probably prevents more confusion than not. Generally speaking, I see more and more that interfaces really are never either right or wrong...

    Aqua Inconsistency

    a) I have often wanted to be able to activate a link in a non-active window. b) I have never wanted to change the toolbar of a non-active window. Why is it better UI design that I not be able to do (a) while being able to do (b)?

Yes, I understand your argument, but what you haven't explained is why that's better or good.

    Aqua Inconsistency

I'm a little surprised at the negative reaction to being able to affect controls in non-active windows. Why is that such a bad thing? (I can certainly find uses for it!) As far as "bending" vs "breaking" a metaphor: that's exactly the arbitrary behaviour I have a problem with! Who decides...

    Aqua Inconsistency

I have a bit of a problem with a part of Aqua that I wanted to get opinions on. The problem isn't so much with the inconsistency, as much as the apparently arbitrary nature of it. Why is it that the mouse pointer can action some of the controls in a non-active window and not others...

    Long filenames in BBEdit 6.5

Does anyone know why you can't use long filenames (> 31 chars) in the src attribute of an img tag in BBEdit 6.5 under OS X.1? (The Image dialog says "This file is beyond the scope of the current server") According to the Help file all you need to access long filenames is an HFS+ formatted...
