Mac OS X on a PC?

The core of the OS (Darwin) can be run on x86 hardware, however the GUI cannot. Darwin would be the equivilent of DOS, and Aqua would be the Windows that sits on top of DOS. One is x86 compatible, the other is not. It is highly doubtful that Apple will ever release the entire OS for the x86...

iTunes reporting screwy bitrates - need fix for files

Yeah, the problem of course is when you want to burn a audio CD from mp3's with iTunes, it'll think you can only put on 2-3 songs because of the length of each track. iTunes doesn't seem to have any problems with the VBR files it creates though.

iTunes reporting screwy bitrates - need fix for files

I encoded about a dozen music CD's at the office, and brought them home to load up onto my computer. I used a reg'd verison of MusicMatch Plus 7.2 on my Windoze box, using high quality VBR mode. After loading them into iTunes 3, it reports the bitrates as being 30-100 kbps, and the track...

    HELP w/ macosX clean install

The Jag boot CD includes a disk utility that is accessible from the installer's menu (select Disk Tools, I believe), which allows you to re-partition and re-format. That's what I used when I did a clean install (and wanted to get rid of the OS9 partition to make one big OS X partition).

FYI, inetd.conf depreciated. 10.2 Switched to xinetd

Cool - I was wondering if/when Apple would do this.. It's a shame they missed the latest GCC3 release though, and hopefully there will be a service pack for the dev tools.

sweet - I'll have to try it out when I get home. Thanks.

    iTunes autolaunch on iPod connect

Is there any way to kill this 'feature'? It drives me crazy when I reboot, and iTunes insists on launching when the iPod is connected.

installing jaguar without a cd drive?

Well, considering you have to boot off it to install it.. I'd say no

    OSX on my G3 400

Two recommendations - PCI Radeon (cheap on eBay), and a 7200rpm hard drive. Upgrading the hard drive on my G3-266 was like doubling the CPU speed, there was THAT much of a difference in speed. If your strapped for cash, go for the hard drive first.

QE Performance - the true picture!

Everyone knows the live window resizing is pathetically slow.. I wonder why more apps don't take advantage of line resizing instead of trying to live-resize. Granted it's still faster than it was before, and the window moving is nice and smooth now.

    Long File Names

I'd have to say it's a limitation of AFP then, because I've never been able to create or copy a file with a long name using AFP to a remote share. It sounds like Apple has patched Jaguar's AFP implementation to allow long-file name copying, but not file creation.. You've gotten farther than I...

    Long File Names

The only problems I've had with file sharing and long filenames, is appletalk shares. I've never been able create/copy a file with a long name onto a remote hosting running either: atalkd (linux), PC Maclan (Windows) or File Sharing for Mac (Windows 2000 advanced server). I've never had...

You might want to provide more detail. What is the OS is the remote host running? What file sharing protocol?

    The Jaguar Bugs Thread

*LAUGHS* I got you beat. OS X ran over my dog, and knocked up the neighbor's daughter. :D

    The Jaguar Bugs Thread

Odd - I don't have a swap partition, but I do have extra entries. :D I did a clean install, repartitioned the drive to one partition and choose not to install OS 9 disk driver partition(s).

    iChat buggy?

Thanks - I finally figured that one out after posting. :D When I did that, I didn't think it was working.. it took a reboot to make the changes show up.

    Jaguar slows my Warcraft3

I just have a hard time believing that Apple would not have considered all these aspects before implementing QE. Logically what should happen is that QE would release all texture allocations on the card if a program required raw OpenGL mode, and when the program is releases control back to the...

    Jaguar slows my Warcraft3

Very true - but is QE being used while your playing a game of WC3? There's nothing for QE to render, therefore I venture to guess that QE is not slowing down the system when it's not being used.

    Jaguar slows my Warcraft3

Games don't use Quartz Extreme, so I don't see this being the issue. However, there IS something taking more cpu cycles than under 10.1.
