    network 9 & x

Yeah, its a bit of a pain. I was doing it by disabling the file sharing in X, opening the file sharing control panel under classic and turing on file sharing there. Not the best way, but it worked. Then I upgraded to 10.2 and everything works as you'd expect it to. Definitely worth the upgrade!

    Maya not redrawing panels!

Dunno, think it might be 3.5 - not my computer, but it was running on 10.2 so thats probably the answer. Guess I'll have to make do with my PLE which is 3.5.1 until I can afford the full version. Cheers

    Internet sharing w/ crossover cable

I set my Internet sharing to on on the connected machine, then under Built-in Ethernet on the sharing control for the second machine, set TCP-IP to Configure using DHCP. Dont bother putting anything else in. Save and close everything and, umm, thats it. It just works. Sometimes have to re-enable...

    Maya not redrawing panels!

I've been trying to get to grips with Maya 3.5 on a Quicksilver G4 with a GeForce 2MX graphics card and it refuses to refresh the screen - not the windows with the 3D stuff in - they all refresh beautifully, but the panels and everything else around them will only redraw if you drag something...

How do I share a folder?

Under 10.1 nothing seemed to work right, but under 10.2 it's easier. You just turn on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing prefs panel and you're underway. If you log in as an Admin you can do whatever you want. If you're a normal user, you can only access your home folder and other public folders.

    Added memory not recognized!

Aha! The AppleCare document explains a problem I had - I bought a 256Mb PC100 SO DIMM for my PBG3 and it was showing up as a 128. I had to pay more to get a Kingston 66MHz version for it to work right. Not very well thought out those firmware updates!

Does more RAM increase 10.2 speed?

10.2 feels snappier on my Powerbook G3 upgraded from 192 to 384Mb. Not hugely noticeable as a performance jump, but it all just feels... better. Don't think it'd keep getting better and better tho, don't see any point going past 1152 in my G4!

    leaving mac on?

Yeah, just press the power button on the front of Quicksilvers or pick Sleep from the Apple menu and it all goes eerily quiet, with just the 'breathing' light for company. As good as off, but starts back up in seconds!

    Complaint List: Mitsubishi DiamondPoint SB70

Don't give up! If you pester them enough they'll give you free stuff, if only to shut you up! And maybe even sort your monitor out.

    Is this good?

The 14 incher's the way to go - these are cool machines (we have a 600 at work). Only thing that seems to slow it down is the hard drive cos they (the one we have at least) have 4200rpm drives - better drive performance on my PBG3 with an IBM Travelstar 5400rpm drive. Other than that, go for it...

    Complaint List: Mitsubishi DiamondPoint SB70

Mitsubishi monitors generally seem pretty decent. I've got a DiamondPro 740SB and it's great at 1280x1024. My mate's got one too and said it flickered a bit, but I figured that might be cos he was using Windows - maybe not?! Not sure you're really selling it too well either way!

    osX on a imac 333mhz?

Either way it'd be worth upgrading. You can get an ATA 40Gb for very little these days and installings a doddle in your free drive bay. Then you can copy all your stuff over and make your old drive one big 6Gb for a system disk and photosop scratch maybe?!?!

Firewire CardBus Card on PBG3 Wallstreet

Oh yeah, so it does, pops up right there! Sure that never happened last time, tho there was a lot of dust in there! Guess i was having trouble before cos I was trying it with an unpowered PocketDrive. Nice one guys, fanx. Am already running Jaguar too, thanx. Don't have any memory probs yet...

    No sound in OS X

Sounds simple, but check your sound prefs panel. When I switched from 9 to X my iSub 'stopped working'. Found an Apple tech document and it had just switched on to mute. D'oh!

    iMac (Flat Panel) HD upgrade

It's a shame to have to have any unnecessary wires or drives hanging off the thing tho. They look so nice without clutter. See how much you can open before you have to do anything that looks like it will void your warranty (peeling stickers or breaking stuff). If you get to the drive - swap it...

    Are old macs worth it

There's a Quadra on ebay with "monitor, printer and more" for $10 so if you can get enough, you could make a bit of cash. Interestingly, a CD kit for the same computer is on there for $20!

    Are old macs worth it

They have some value, possibly, depending on your position. We used to have a Mac II where I used to work which did menial tasks like imaging non-urgent artwork. This is going back a few years and it was already out of date then. These are very old machines tho, so unless you are in a position...

    Can't Print Anymore

Upgrade! Jaguar's way more finished than 10.1.5, plus the problems that I used to have with a StylusPhoto1290 - intermittent refusal to print, remedied by pausing and unpausing the print queue - have gone under 10.2 (so far so good!). Someone else had the same problem with the 1290 and theirs is...

    Tarty Powerbook G3s

Am thinking of tarting up my PowerBook G3 with a custom makeover as per the AppleFritter Hacks page - maybe a similar effect to the Sapphire one, but in Platinum to match my car! Has anyone attempted this and if so, what do the results look like close up? And does car paint stick to the plastic...

    leaving mac on?

I had 2 Commodre 64 and an Amiga power pack die on me, way back before they made things properly, but my Umax Apus is still running fine 6 years on and that gets turned off every time its not being used (tho the battery needs replacing now!). Quicksilver and PBook both silent in sleep so I only...
