    W00T! Firefox 1.0!

There's the definite advantage that you can upgrade FireFox (or Camino, etc) to get new features like RSS feeds while with Safari you must purchase and install a whole new operating system version to get such features.

[HOWTO] - Keep permissions up to date automatically.

Thank you for the quick UNIX crontab primer. My next question would be, does changing the time values for the pre-defined daily/weekly/montly tasks here make them run at better times? I know there are lots of utilities to force run those tasks "now" but I wonder why no one has made such a...

    what happened to VirtualPC7?

Native speed? Native to what? "x86 at 1GHz" means very little considering Intel's and AMD's 1GHz CPUs has vastly different performance (AMD's were typically faster). And if I have a dual processor G4 PowerMac, would I get 80% of my total processing power, or only of one CPU? I could SURELY...

    W00T! Firefox 1.0!

I see a lot of similarities between Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Camino. All three are lean, mean browsing (and ONLY browsing) machines -- like Opera used to be back in the day (Saturday I think :)). All three have user configurable toolbars with drag and drop ability, all three have separate...

Color laser printers and how they'll get me a job.

HP color lasers are pretty nice on the whole. The only one I'm specifically familiar with is the old-ish 4500C. However my work has a Tektronix Phaser 8600DP (double sided printing) which is, I believe, one of those wax or "solid ink" printers. It's used by our marketing department and makes...

standard pci card not fitting in g5 pci slot

Pray tell, what types of PCI cards are cross-platform compatible. I've got a very nice PCI TV Tuner card (made by Asus for the PC) which I would love to be able to use in my PowerMac G4. However I can find no evidence of anyone ever using it (or even trying to use it) in a Mac -- and since...

Importing mp3 (of wav, etc) into GarageBand

What, just drag the files from the iTunes list to GB? Or did you import/process them in iTunes and then you were able to drag them from the Finder to GB? Thanks.

Importing mp3 (of wav, etc) into GarageBand

Agreed, that is the text I read. However it doesn't work when I drag my mp3 files to GB as specified. I know the mp3 files are "safe" (ie. not protected in any way) because they're my own mp3 files of my own compositions. They are otherwise standard CD audio tracks converted into mp3 format...

Importing mp3 (of wav, etc) into GarageBand

I just got iLife '04 and have started testing GarageBand. I like it, but I've read (in the help file I believe) that you can import mp3 files into it by simply dragging them from Finder into either an existing Real Instrument track or a blank space in the tracks window. It doesn't work for me...

    Appleworks 7 coming?

Considering the work that has been done to port OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 to MacOS X (even if it does still use the X11 GUI rather than native Aqua) it would be spectacular to find the work was being done at least in part to build a new back-end for AW -- one that supports the OOo document formats...

    DVD+R on OSX?

Excellent. Thank you for the quick response. I've got a (short) stack of 8X DVD+R discs that I wanted to be sure I could use on my new Mac. I didn't want to have to sell a spindle of 17 discs. :)

    DVD+R on OSX?

Okay, I've tried many times to search for "DVD+R" support in MacOS X, but search engines always return both DVD-R and DVD+R results (apparently even if in quotes the + gets interpreted as "AND" or is ignored altogether. I know Apple doesn't officially support DVD+R but since the 4X and 8X...

    Mac share of home market?

A less expensive unit would certainly help attract some new users. I'd have jumped right into the Mac world when I read (with excitement!) about Panther late last year if I could have bought a new Mac for the same as I could build my own new PC (say around $650-800US). I wasn't interested in...

Not able to shot down / auto restart

Cheryl, that is how I had it set up, yes. I do not have a USB hub nor a USB hub built into my monitor. jhogeterp, where is this preferences folder of which you speak? Right now I'm having difficulty locating the file search utility and an ls -r finder.plist turned up nothing.

Not able to shot down / auto restart

Getting back here -- I don't know what Extensis is. All that's on my Mac is OSX 10.2.8 and a handful of programs I'm trying out: Unison (usenet), Fire (IM), Firefox (browser - recently added after the problem already existed), Thunderbird (email - recently added after the problem already...

    10.3.5 (Complete Thread)

I'd like to see Apple revive some long-overdue technologies from OS/2's GUI (like drag and drop fonts and colors - something I've yet to find in any other OS but which made working in OS/2 fantasically easy and powerful all at the same time). Windows "kind of" has it with their Display >...

Adding a Mac to an existing Windows Network... problems...

Thanks, I will look into that. I'm fairly new to shell scripting and a total newbie to AppleScript, but I'm willing to try.

    Hardware Requirements for 10.4

I am so not looking forward to the day when Apple stops supporting the G4 processor. Having just bought a (very expensive compared to what I could have gotten with PC components) dual G4, I hope to all that is good and wholesome that at least the next 2 versions of OS X will still support it...

Not able to shot down / auto restart

I have a similar problem (sometimes). 2 times out of 3 (or maybe 4 out of 5) my PowerMac will shut down properly. Then once in a while, out of the blue, it will decide to restart rather than shut down. I haven't found it necessary to pull the plug -- simply pressing and holding the power...
