takes 3 minutes to connect to the net

well, I tried deleting the ppp.log file, and it still stalled, but only for a few seconds and I have not had a long hang since I did that, so maybe it did do something!

takes 3 minutes to connect to the net

thanks for the tip - I am in 9 right now, but I'll try it next time OSX is up.

takes 3 minutes to connect to the net

I primarily use OSX and this is one of my biggest complaints. There does not seem to be a fix for it anywhere. I would have thought that Apple would fix it with 10.0.4, but no such luck. Mine has frozen for as long as 6 minutes before!!

    To all fellow web developers

I usually write and test in Winblows IE, then fix the problems in Winblows Netscape, then check everything on the mac version of IE. If a page gets through all that, it will probably look fine in Omni. My page (http://ncaikido.org/hotani) works fine in all of the above, and is a little wacky...

    I give up

YES!! The exact same thing happened to me - I was loading a page that had flash content (home.com) in IE, and it just froze up everything... good to know it was not just my machine or something.

    I give up

Mr_Frost: the finder is completely frozen - maybe this has not happened to you yet. I cannot click out of the frozen app, command+option+esc does nothing (thus no force quit), the only way out is to telnet in and kill the process or reboot. I usually reboot because most of the time, my machine...

    chess in os x!!

Looks like there is no human vs. human. I could not believe it so i went and checked... the program is an apple front end to the open source gnu chess, so I don't know if it is the apple piece or the original program that is missing the functionality.

    I give up

I agree with the thread starter. I have used OS X extensively on a G3 powerbook 266, and now on a new iBook 500. I have also used Windows 2000 on a PIII/550, and here are my somewhat objective reasons why Windows 2000 is better (as much as I hate to admit it...): 1- OSX is painfully slow...

    Finder windows not updating?

I have not experienced this specific problem, but a similar one. It seems that the available disk space displayed in the Finder is additive, but not subtractive. When I add to a directory and look at the 'View Info' window, it updates as it should. However, if I remove a file - or all the...

    Anyones' Machine Freezing in OSX?

I am glad to see this issue being addressed. I think this is the most important "bug" currently in OS X, and it has happened to me many times. What is ironic about it is that, unlike OS 9, only the window manager or 'Finder' application is frozen. In most cases (9 out of 10 probably), Darwin...

What do you name your macs ?

well, I had to find out some day... someone else (RacerX) uses the name HAL 9000!! I first used that name when I had a weird corrupted hard drive problem, and just like the original HAL 9000, it seemed that my computer decided it was better off without my control! Ever since then my...

    Problems with VCDs

yeah, I just put in a VCD and got the "continue, format or eject" dialog box. I don't know about anyone else, but I have the new iBook and when I hit "continue"(big mistake) it was bye bye cd drive: it will not open or respond to anything. Guess it is reboot time...

How are you guy partitionning your HD?

my HD is only 4 GB with a 500MB 9.1 partition and the rest for OS X. If I were a little smarter :) I would have made 3 partitions with two systems and one for documents or put /users on there...

To intel or not to intel

I say yes: 90% or more of the computer users out there are on intel boxes, or some variation running winders. If just a small percentage of those people would just try out an intel port of Mac OS X I think some would be willing to switch. As it is now, if someone wants to try it out they have to...

network control panel will not accept input for nameservers

I have had my system set up from the Darwin days, which means I originally configured everything with config files in /etc. Now I am trying to use OSX 10.0 with internet connect. The problem is that in the network control panel, I cannot enter anything for the nameservers (i can click in the...

no backlight on powerbook when waking from sleep

my problem is annoying, but not permanent. If I am hooked up to an external monitor, then change the display back to the wallstreet, then sleep, it will not come on. However, if I restart the machine it is fine (until I hook up another monitor)... I don't think mine is worth fixing if it is a...

    PHP4 on Mac OS X 10.0 ???

i installed 10.0 on top of public beta and everything still works; apache+mysql+php4.... I have heard php is included in 10.0 as a DSO module, which means all you have to do is enable it... I have never used php in this manner so I don't know how well that works... my php4 was compiled...

DO NOT stuff in applications folder

UG! thats what I said in my first post: I created an 'Alias' directory in which I created subdirectories or categories into which I put aliases of the applications (by dragging them over the dir and then pushing the command+option keys). Then by using the cool new expandable folder dock...

DO NOT stuff in applications folder

WHAT!!!!??? Install WHAT there? you want me to put sherlock and system prefs in my own user directory? You want me to install apps in my User dir so others have to search to find and use them? what are you thinking? Don't tell me to 'Think Unix'!! I think the issue here is having an...
