If you believe it's the installer application, you could get a copy from your friends Mac. You could try to repair permissions using disk utility or trash the preference file as well. Both could cause problems. Have you tried using another .dmg package?

You could try to trash the preference file and use the setup assistant again.

I don't believe there is an OS issue here. It seems the ISP you use, is somewhat known for problems. You might want to try going to the Apple website itself for updates. Might not be easier, but it should work... :)

Have you added any new hardware recently? ( ram, airport card, etc...) A kernel panic is usually a result of a "bad" piece of hardware or hardware that isn't inserted properly.

Try holding the shift key down until the desktop appears. The "Connector or machine incorrect" in the startup log appears to be normal for PowerBooks. However, the "hangup" issue, seems to indicate a startup conflict. ( what we are trying to stop ) Read this article for some startup ideas...

If you are able to log in, immediately after you hit enter, hold down the shift key. (before the desktop appears) It will stop any finder windows from opening and startup items that may be causing the freeze. Hopefully, the preferences that you deleted, won't be a problem.
