The awful truth about OS X

Yeah, I think you're in the minority. I can't recall even my PB crashing, and the final release seems to be fairly solid, so far as I've seen so far. Not a single crash. What problems I do have come mostly from applications.

    User Folder Templates

Y'know when you make a new user, and in his folder, there's a buncha other folders (Pictures, Sites, Desktop, Library, etc.)? Well, I just found the file that contains that. It's actually a tarsomethingorother archive, and you can find it at...

    Dock Size Snapping

Yay for the Option key! It's actually amazing how many different things are changed by it. Our old friend...

    Privileges

Okay, here's the deal, yo: You can change anything and everything in your user folder. I'm pretty sure not much else. If you're an admin, you can change things in the applications folder, and I believe other user's folders. You can change things in the Library folder. You cannot change...

    Alias in the doc?

Okay, aliases to folders might not work... but why would you need to put an alias in the dock? The whole thing about the dock is that it doesn't actually store your folder in there, it just.. uh.. makes an alias to it. So you shouldn't NEED to put a folder alias in the dock. VGZ... I couldn't...

    Good or Bad

I pretty much agree with Dogma's take on the situation. It's for people who are... more that just computer users. If you like to tinker, it's lovely. If you like staring at the genie effect and all the other Quartz features, it's friggin' rad. But if you're the type who starts yelling and...

    killing all animation

As far as I've been able to tell through my wanderings in forums, there is no way to turn off the animations though. I suppose Apple should have built in an option to do that, but then their OS just wouldn't have the same... new agey feel to it, y'know? BTW, if you don't want all them great...

    App Menu: Icon?

Yeah, I hear yah. It is rather annoying. Perhaps that info might be stored in a plist somewhere?

    System menu font

Yeah, I feel the same way. Apparently TinkerTool doesn't work, it only affects other things. I'm sure, if you really really wanted to, that you could find the Apple Menu executable file, figure out where the font is stored in it, and then change it. Why, I remember back in the PB when it was the...

    Dual monitor problems

I've got a secondary monitor plugged into my Pismo. And then I decided that, nah, I didn't really need the second monitor, so I unplugged it. Later on, it was time for a reboot after changing something or other, and I went off to eat dinner after clicking restart. And hour later, I come back...

    Classic awareness

Well well well... going back to the original topic of this discussion, I seem to have discovered a cure. Although I'm not sure what adverse affects it might have. Whilst digging around in the /System/Library/CoreServices folder, I found Classic Startup. Of course, I knew it was there all along...

    Fire 0.22a

Yes, I do feel the same way. So far for me, though, Fire's been working reasonably well with AIM. Of course, you can always use the Classic version, but who wants to do THAT?

How to install OS X without booting from CD

Yeah, installing over your PB isnt' good for anything. Basically, when you install the final over the PB, it just updates everything. It keeps all of your preferences, keeps root enabled, etc. etc. BUT... you lose funtionality. I did this at first, and many things just didn't work. All in all...

    Classic awareness

Yeah, you're right. One less thing in the dock, seamless integration, all that good stuff. It's just that I like to keep track of what's going on in my system. And if I'm going to boot a Classic app, I like to know whether or not Classic is gonna have to start up, 'cause if it does have to start...

    Classic awareness

Well, I got my copy FedExed to me today. I promptly installed it over my PB, realized that was dumb, erased my OS X partition, installed 9.1 off the CD which came with X, installed X, and here we are. Countless hours later, I think I've finally got it all set up just the way I want it. Not...

Help, Classic is making me nuts!

OS X doesn't support 9.1 for Classic. You have to have 9.0.4 or earlier. That could be a reason why it's not working for you.

    Oh my.... that's FAST!

I know. I hate everyone that has something better than a 56k, because I can't get DSL or cable where I am. My friend across town downloaded Oni for me... He was like, "It's only going at 150 k/sec, it's soooo slow right now." And I was all, "I'd kill everyone in my neighborhood for phenomenal...

    Keystrokes being lost

I dunno. I seem to recall having a similar problem on my iMac, same model, Pro keyboard. I suppose it's possible that it's a bug in OS X, although you'd think that keyboard support would be something that would be finished...

    Japanese Fonts in terminal

Well, I don't know if this'll work, and you've probably already tried it, but it's worth a shot. In Terminal, go up to the font menu, then select show fonts. Select the font that you want. Now, that may not work, seeing as how Webdings and Zapf Dingbats (which are symbol fonts) only show boxes...

Problem running Classic from OS X!!!

I can HELP! Yes indeedy, this very same problem has happened to me multiple times. I believe it happens when you go about changing your file permissions. Now, the important thing to understand here is that we're dealing with UNIX. That means that the permissions that you can set through the...
