    Loading everything from Time Machine

Thanks for your advice, I think I'll transfer via migration assistant as the new Mac will be all round better spec. Then I can clean the old one and figure what to do with it. I remember I transferred everything when I brought my present Mac from an older machine, having had a quick look I see I...

    Loading everything from Time Machine

My old G5, Dual 2.5GHz Power PC has been playing up of late, but a friend who owns a graphics company has a G5 Quad he's letting me have. Everything, applications, work, etc., is backed up on Time Machine so I'm hoping I can load everything from there onto the cleaned G5 and use it. How exactly...

    Oops - G5 just died.

Thanks, I've already tried that, and using the command line in Terminal but it won't budge. I have to go out now but when I get back I shall have another go with the paper clip, and perhaps try to hook something onto the tray to give it a bit of gentle persuasion.

    Oops - G5 just died.

Bluetooth back!! I opened the set up assistant, which I tried before but it didn't see my phone, and it's all running fine now. Curious. Just got to get that pesky CD out now.

    Oops - G5 just died.

Well I've done the paper clip trick before (and it took ages searching through drawers before I found one) and the tray's not budging, I'm pushing the clip way in but no movement. I'll give it another go later. The bluetooth preference pane shows my wife's phone and my son's - I removed mine...

    Oops - G5 just died.

Thanks again for your help, I hadn't realised the front of the CD drive slid down - I thought it was part of the drive, that's why I couldn't see a hole. I've slid it down and put a paper clip in but it still won't open. I can feel contact and hear a whirr but it won't open. The Bluetooth icon...

    Oops - G5 just died.

Thanks for replying and apologies for the late reply. I was out all day yesterday and when I got home I thought I'd give it another try. Oh joy! It came back up, although I saw the folder with the flashing question mark for a few seconds. Now a couple of months back a CD got stuck in the drive...

    Oops - G5 just died.

I'd been having problems with bluetooth on my G5 dual processor running Leopard, so decided to reset the pram. I restarted the computer but it wouldn't turn off, just closed down all the applications, cleared the desktop then sat there. It wouldn't close down via the power button, so after 10...

    Stuck CD

Thanks for replying, and I think it is the access door stopping it, but you say push and hold it down, doesn't it come forward, i.e. pull it? I've tried that with a bit of wire, but didn't want to pull too hard.

    Stuck CD

I have a CD which won't come out of the cd drive on my Mac G5. I've tried all the tricks - restart holding mouse, eject via disc utility etc., but it seems to be physically stuck, the drive tries to open but won't. How would I remove it from inside the Mac - is it a lot of bother? Mac G5...

    Black screen on start up.

I have connected my son's iMac to my G5 via a firewire cable and mounted it, enabling me to retrieve his photos and his music, which I've put onto an external hard drive. I guess this means it's the monitor part of it which is the problem. Any ideas as to what can be done to rectify it?

    Black screen on start up.

Thank you so much for your help. The enclosures are only about £5 + p&p on ebay so I think we'll go that route. As my son said last night he bought it about 3 - 4 years back from a friend who was emigrating and sold it cheap for a quick sale. He's got his money's worth from it and uses his...

    Black screen on start up.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I hear the chime when it starts and I can hear the disc doing things as well as feeling it by holding the Mac. So I take it the hard drive is working. The serial number is just out of range unfortunately. As I said my son is mainly concerned about getting his photos...

    Black screen on start up.

I may be wrong about that, I'm seeing him later and will ask. I tried starting from my black Leopard DVD but still a black screen. I managed to get the disc out by starting up and holding the mouse button. I do have a spare monitor - would there be a way to start up with this attached? I'm...

    Black screen on start up.

He got it off of ebay and it didn't have the Snow Leopard disc, would it start from a Leopard disc, which I have? Don't want to try it and lose the disc. He has told me that as he got it cheap, and he uses a Macbook mostly, he's not too concerned apart from the 20+gb of pics he's got in iPhoto...

    Black screen on start up.

My son's iMac G5 suddenly went to a black screen on start up. I've been reading various posts about this, but in this case the power light goes off about 7-8 seconds after booting up, although I can feel the disc spinning if I hold the body of the Mac. Any ideas, please?

pixellated screen + screen of death

My son asked me to look at his friend's iMac G5 and it's in a bad way. When I boot up there are scan lines and coloured pixels everywhere, goes to a blue screen and get the restart message (the one in different languages). I've booted in safe mode and run repair permissions. In safe mode the...

    Old iMac OS

I've just bought my 4 year old grandson an old iMac (for all of £6). It's running OS9. It's a 233mHz with only 96mb of ram. Would it run OS X.1, or would it need more memory?

    Dead G4

My son has a fairly old G4 which suddenly wouldn't start up, it's completely dead. I imagine this is due to the power supply going, though if anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I have a G4 of a similar age which I've used for spares; would the power supply be compatible with the...
