Is it worth paying for another year of Netgear Armor?

Thanks, satcomer for your reply and reminding me of Little Snitch and what it can show. My query was, in spite of the scary-looking traffic, whether this was actually a threat and worth worrying about or if there is a cheaper tool for peace of mind. My need has been put on hold thanks to some of...

Is it worth paying for another year of Netgear Armor?

I got this BitDefender-powered software when I bought a small Orbi Mesh system last year. It's clean, simple and doesn't intrude needlessly. It (probably does) cover my iMac and two iDevices. It'll cost me $60 for the year ahead and $99 thereafter. It has spotted nothing on any ot 3 gadgets. I...

    Keyboard with mis-programmed keys

Thanks for the thought, DeltaMac. I have already checked that link and looked for that pref pane option but it's just not there, no matter what Apple say. The Viewer shows the key pressed except when its a bound F-key: F12 (dashboard) is bound to 'vol up' and that screen indicator is shown and...

    Keyboard with mis-programmed keys

I'm using OS X 10.9 and can't find that tick-box in keyboard prefs, alas. Pressing the modifier keys along with the said function keys makes little difference and doesn't return to default. :( I have not mentioned the supplier's name yet in the hopes that they will reply to my two emails as...

    Keyboard with mis-programmed keys

I recently got an el cheapo Mac-alike Bluetooth keyboard. It's fine enough, but I notice that many/all of the Function keys are off-kilter. They tend to display the behaviour they would when the Fn key is pressed: No Dashboard on F12, but Volume louder and teh key beyond F12 - says 'Del' with...

CSVs in a comma-free land and other woes

I am currently using files with extension .cdb - which are just .csvs with the usual(?) commas and some added vendor-specific rows. I want to open them in Excel (2008) as though they are .csvs. Ideally, they would open via 'File>Open' - or at least on being selected in Finder - with each item...

Reading PDFs on a Palm via a Mac?

Palm T5 going cheap: I've got an Android now!

Reading PDFs on a Palm via a Mac?

Can any of the dying breed of Mac-and-Palm owners please tell me how I can read PDFs on my Palm after loading them via Missing Link on my Mac? Missing Link didn't want to load a PDF from Finder and said so by greying all PDFs out. No 'Show All Files' option was on the 'Open' window as it...

Lost admin perms and want them back.

In case anyone wants to know, of the 'find' line quoted earlier, I ran 15 passes on the folders and some files wildcards and 7 more were needed on the disk root to modify all qualifying files. Something to do with how much memory is available to the shell? My iMac has 4GB RAM and I didn't...

Lost admin perms and want them back.

SOLVED It all works now! How? Short answer is: sudo find -x /(relevant folder) -user 502 -exec chown -hv 501 {} + (courtesy of Hal Itosis on macrumors.com) The long answer is: All files that were once mine (the initial admin user) with ID 501 were now owned by 502 who was a temporary...

Lost admin perms and want them back.

Thanks for that, but being able to take over my old 'unused'(remember, my user-name had vanished but the folder was still there) saved me from having to do the stuff in the article quoted. I'm going to try the earlier-mentioned action and will report what happened. Cross fingers for me!

Lost admin perms and want them back.

System/accounts = System Preferences -> Accounts. Sorry. Haste doesn't help clarity. My /Users shortname folder tree was untouched. When I recreated myself while logged in in Single User Mode I was able to take it over during the creation of the 'new' username.

Lost admin perms and want them back.

The link was not useful as my old admin user was not turned into a Standard, the user was actually wiped/obliterated from system/Accounts but with all files still intact in /Users. All installed apps that I had installed had had their owner - the first name in Get Info - changed to the other...

Lost admin perms and want them back.

Just read that, thanks to you. The success that one had with "Go to ~/Library/preferences/ByHost/ and delete all com.apple.HIToolbox files." etc. was not mine, too. Still all files that I previously 'owned' have the other admin user's name in them! A solution that occurred to me and fell on...

Lost admin perms and want them back.

I lost admin rights to my Mac after a crash and the only other user, also admin, seems to have been make boss-admin user in that all the apps that I 'owned' are now in his name! Just re-adding my name as an admin user did not change this wrongful allocation. How do I reverse this situation?

Can I burn a Linux ISO to a USB stick?

I want to burn a Linux distro to a USB stick using my iMac but have got either another ISO image on the stick or, if the ISO is unpacked, a fine-looking set of files on it which will not boot. How do I create a bootable stick, please??

Do you have a Canon LBP5000?

I know all that and I execrate Canon too. Had I been aware of their ignoring SL Macs I would have 'publicly' not bought their photographic products recently. The quoted CUPS/OPD page for the LPD5000 is annoyingly undated and reads like it did when first I looked at it over a year ago, making...

Do you have a Canon LBP5000?

That is sad. I nearly rushed off and bought Snow Leopard but got the 'never buy version 1.0' feeling and put it off. Did your cardboard box (apt!) work under Leopard? Many (well, some. Not many were sold to Maccies, it seems) reported failure then, and I was overjoyed to find that it finally...

Do you have a Canon LBP5000?

If any other lonely LBP5000-owning souls come upon this post, let them take heart. I have finally got the Big Brute to run under 10.5.7 (now .8). It happened after an OS reinstall and full update and following the Canon instructions to the letter. I hope this good news is as uplifting to...

Syntax to remove terminal window after command has run?

I need to launch a CLI app - synergy - and can't ascertain what the syntax is to avoid the terminal window hanging around after the command is completed. (Not the end of the world but I'm sure things can be kept clean on the desktop.)
