DHCP serves up IP addresses for new computers on your network (if you do not hardcode them). This is usually handled by your router, although Mac server does have a DHCP server. A Name Server is the computer that handles DNS. Again, Mac server has a DNS server you can activate. Usually, your...

Mobile Account from a 10.5 server to 10.6 clients

My X-Serve is the original G4 XServe so I can't upgrade it from 10.5 to Snow Leopard (10.6). The new laptop is 10.6. I can't seem to use mobile accounts with the laptop. Any ideas on a solution short of buying a brand new server? Thanks in advance.

You might try Lynda.com. At $25 per month gives you access to their educational media. They have a nice section on 10.5 Server. When your done be sure to un-subscribe - or they will keep dinging you $25 per month... I have not $$ interest in lynda.com; I am just an occasional customer.

Mac doesn't use Linux, but BSD Linux. You could probably install the appropriate Linux in a disk partition or extra disk and duel boot. Or set it up in a virtual machine.

    basic script question.

Fintler: True. What you are doing then is spawning a new process ("bash"), just to run a script. And sometime there are good reasons for doing so. In the olden days, it would have seemed unnecessary overhead. Fast computers today -- poof!
