Works fine with OS 9 and OS X, jolly fast, 16x10x40, Pure Phase Laser System (whatever that means), overrun protection, all the works.

Does anyone else find that every time they boot up into 10.1, it's 1:00am on Thu 1/Jan/1970? I've seen this problem mentioned on another web site, but no useful conclusions.  My battery's fine; OS 9.2 keeps time perfectly.  And I did a fresh install (10.0 with reformat, and then...

Type codes, yes.  Maybe. But creator codes, NO!  I had no end of trouble in OS 9 when I'd create a web site in BBEdit and then have to go through lots of hassle when I wanted to view it in IE or whatever.  Not to mention the game I used to play guessing which app would come up...

10.1 does indeed seem to have fixed this!  :) Back in 10.0.04, it would quit any time from 5 minutes to an hour or so - under 10.1 I've had several multi-hour connections, and I haven't seen it quit once.  Ace!

It's my guess that a lot of you, experiencing this problem, are owners of dual processor G4s, right? Yep.  How did you guess?  As you say, this problem is most annoying... For some, switching off echo-checks works, but many - as I do - still gets both disconnects and echo-checks...

If you don't see it with <tt>ls -a</tt>, then I guess it's not there; so it must be stored somewhere else on the file system.&nbsp; I'm not expert enough to guess where :)&nbsp; Any other folders called <tt>Desktop</tt> about?

Where did you look? I'd expect it to be in <tt>~/Desktop/</tt> - but if the filename start with a dot the standard <tt>ls</tt> command won't show it and you'll need to use <tt>ls -a</tt>.

I doubt it's a physical problem, as the line works fine with other machines (Falcon, Psion), and with the same machine and (internal) modem under OS9. There's no noise on the line I can hear, and no-one else is interrupting it. It's only a problem under Mac OS X... :( That narrows it down...

Is it genuinely failing to rename the file, or simply truncating the actual name when it displays it (e.g. for sorting)? You can check from the terminal - where you can also rename it properly.

I believe <tt>ksh</tt> is now Open Source (as is <tt>pdksh</tt>), so you should be able to download and recompile it. <p> However, have you tried <tt>zsh</tt>?&nbsp; It's preinstalled, and does pretty much everything <tt>ksh</tt> does along with lots more really useful stuff.&nbsp; It's worth...

Under OS 9.1 (& 9.0.4), the net connection lasts for hours. Under OS X, from PB to 10.0.1, it disconnects at random intervals - sometimes only a few minutes, sometimes the best part of an hour. This is with the internal 56K modem. (Haven't tried the PPP echo fix yet, though.) Extremely...

Sleep does NOT work in OS X 1.0 on my G4 :( It's a standard PowerMac G4 500x2, 4 months old. The only unusual things are: a SCSI card (factory installed), and a couple of USB gadgets (Microtech CameraMate and Belkin Serial Adapter, neither of which have OS X drivers AFAIK...). If the SCSI...
