[FAQ]Can I install Tiger on my Mac from another Mac's DVD/CDs?

What exactly is a "household" and how long do you need to reside there to be a member? I say this, because I live at my parents place for 6.1 months out of the year. I live out of the country for the rest of the time. My medical is still covered because I'm still considered a resident cuz I live...

Can't mount DMG in OS 8.6

I'm trying to install some drivers that I need for some hardware and I need to install Stuffit so I can decompress the driver files. However, diskcopy 6.3 that I downloaded doesn't seem to be able to mount the image. It says failed to mount. :(

PowerMac 6500 - Couple Issues need help with

I just inherited a PowerMac 6500. Issue 1: When I initially booted the system, I'm pretty sure it said it was a 400mhz w/128mb RAM. Now, I've whiped the drive and reinstalled OS 8.5 and updated to OS 8.6. (I don't have OS 9.x yet), and it only says its 225mhz. I think this Mac has one of...

    Mouse Acceleration in OSX

Logitech Mouseware has better options for mouse tracking. But you may need to have a logitech mouse. In addition to USB Overdrive there is another program called Sidetrack which allows you to adjust the trackpad sensitivity, but I think this is only for trackpads.

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

OSX has a bit more configurability than a Nintendo. Anyhoo, I was going to try Yellow Dog, but I realized how useful WorldBook 2004 has been in my history class. I suspect there are no offline free encyclopedias for Linux? I use Wikipedia at home, but I can't access the internet during class.

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

I just tried X11 and OpenOffice again. Seems to be working well. Hella faster than Office 2004.

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm now in the process of downloading Yellog Dog 3.01 and I look forward to giving it a run. Do I have to ditch my current instal of OSX?

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

The major reason why I bought an iBook was because all I needed was something small to take notes during class. On a 12" LCD screen, in a bright classroom, it's very difficult to read text and I require a text editor with enough viewing flexibility that I need not use 16pt font just to see the...

    Is Linux faster than OSX?

I'm interested in running Open Office on my iBook. I'm a "native" windows user, and I'm rather frustrated with MS Word 2004 so unbelievably slow, and after trying various other word processors for the Mac, I'm thoroughly unimpressed. I've also tried installing X11 and that crashed on me shortly...

iBook G4 Slow Office Mac 2004 performance?

I don't care so much about the web browsing but I'm amazed how slow Office 2004 runs - and the only thing I'm doing is word processing with Word. No images, either. I should just use TextEdit, come to think of it, since I don't use many advanced word features. I'm trying to find Office V.x...

iBook G4 Slow Office Mac 2004 performance?

I'm about 2 months into owning my first iBook (my first Mac, too) and I'm finding Office Mac 2004 and Firefox are both comparitively much slower than on a PC. The slowness is particularly noticable when scrolling through a document with the scroll bar. If I'm scrolling thru a document in Word...

Logitech for Mouse Sensitivity and Mac-Friendly Keyboard

I've been using the standard Logitech Optical Wheel mouse on my PC for a while now and just tried it on my Mac with the logitech software. The Logitech Control Center software allows you to configure your mouse such that it feels like Windows acceleration. I've been aiming to get a USB...

    Bad Graphics Chip/Memory?

Ok. I have just returned from my local vendor and have tested both games (RealMyst demo and Jedi Academy demo) on a 14" iBook with, presumeably, the same specs as my 12". No problems with this one. So, at this point I'm all but convinced this is a hardware defect. I'm going to reinstal the OS...

    Bad Graphics Chip/Memory?

I've tried adjusting the settings to Max Performance, but that didn't help. If this a resource problem, then it should theoretically clear up once I exit the game. But, instead, it doesn't. Though, it is less severe. I'm going to try and instal these games on another same iBook and see...

    Bad Graphics Chip/Memory?

I'm not running any other apps. My system is significantly over the recommended requirements for RealMyst so I don't imagine it's a problem with not enough power/memory.

    Bad Graphics Chip/Memory?

I bought an iBook G4 1ghz/256/Radeon9200 less than two months ago and I've just now decided to try out some games. I installed RealMyst and after about 5 minutes of playing, the graphics begin to get glitchy and progressively get worse. I tried the demo and the same thing happens. I tried...

    PowerBook Battery Cover

I have a love hate relationship with Google. I love it because I always find answers to my questions, but I hate it because sometimes I forget to look there first. :D From the Dummies website: "The iBook can run just fine with a dead or even missing battery, as long as it's plugged in."...
