Why the new imac will fail

OK, so I haven't read all four pages of this, but I would like to say that as someone who actually works in an Apple store, that the new iMac is drawing crowds every day, and not just Mac users either. I've talked to several people who are ready to switch from Windows just because of the price...

    Here's a real stumper

I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue, since it functions perfectly in OS 9. Any ideas if there's a *nix thing I could do to monitor what's going on onthat port?

    Here's a real stumper

OK, this one's got me scratching my head in a big way. I'm using an iBook running OSX 10.1, with the latest security patches. The problem I'm seeing is this: My Airport range has dropped off drastically recently, but only in OS X. In OS 9, I get a strong signal throughout my house, but in...

If You Have Os 10.1, Clean Install Now!

I'm wondering if the clean install benefit comes more from a defragged disk, rather than any other sort of benefit. I Got a major speed boost when I let TechTool optimize the disk.

    X.1 Killed Mail

Oops. I found the problem; I had moved my Mail app to a sub folder of Applications, and X.1 just put the new one in the Applications folder, rather than seeking out the old version and replacing it. So the new one works, but the old one was what was giving me problems. Sorry.

    X.1 Killed Mail

Already tried logging in as root, no joy. Also ran fsck in Single user mode (much faster boot, btw) and while it found plenty of orphaned nodes, it did not fix the problem. Permissions all seem correct as well.

    X.1 Killed Mail

I can no longer launch Mail. It bounces once, but ever goes any further. Restarting of course did not help. Any ideas?

How To Prevent Booting Off A Cd

OF is Open Firmware. Technically I am, though it's OSX Server 1.2 (old pre-aqua one) There's no way I know of to disable booting from the CD or from the option key trick. If you must have the server in an unlocked room, then remove CD, buy yourself a Firewire external burner for those...

    OSX 10.04 - 10.1 Patch... Why not?

I got my copy free with my iBook, which I might add, runs X just fine for daily work. Yeah, there are sluggish bits, but on the whole I've done just about everything in X that I really wanted to. Games, however, I still run in 9. Of course, it goes without saying that I do use the G4 running...

    DVD Playback is HERE!

Ok, I did what you said, but I can't launch the app. So now what? Forgive me I'm a total *nix newbie, and this is the first app I've compiled.

    macosX on the new ibook

I'm running X on a new iceBook (256 RAM, 20 Gig drive, Combo), and for the most part it's been just fine. I've turned off the bouncing animation in the dock, turned the colors down to thousands and I run "sudo update_prebinding -root /" after I install a few packages and occasionally run "fsck...

    PowerBook battery life

I've got a iBook 2001 (one of the new ones, aka iceBook) and I've gotten close to the five hours by turning down the brightness and just doing some light reading of html developer documentation. I haven't had this thing long enough to really put it through it's paces, but I was surprised that...

    Dual Monitors & Desktops

Does anyone know a way to get OSX to post a different picture on multiple monitors? In OS 9 the Monitors CP let you place different images on each monitor, but the Finder Prefs in X give no such option. Is there a terminal hack that will do it?

    Potential ibook consumers

The iBook is not a suitable machine for graphics, imho. The 12 inch screen is the reason. 1024x768 is simply too small to fit all PhotoShop's or Illustrators palates comfortably, and even if that resolution is acceptable to you I would imagine you having a very difficult time working on 12...
