    MetaFrame ?

I blame Apple for the string parsing business. Anyway, they are redoing the whole Metaframe farm and promised to take the spaces out. Good point about the Java update. I'll check. Thanks.

    Rhapsody on Virtual PC

So I'm a bit lost at this point. Has anybody identified a source for a DR2 Intel image? I found one listed on hotline, but can't download it (error unknown). I would really like to run this.

    MetaFrame ?

Actually, no. I am 100% *n*x, personally and professionally. But I have to devise the *n*x solutions for everything other people implement around here. Thus things like Citrix clients get dumped in my lap. I'm glad that java client bundle is working out for you. The only problem I have had...

    MetaFrame ?

The Display Postscript Server in NeXtStep/OpenStep allowed remote display. It was a bit insecure in that you could not control display server access by host, but otherwise it was functionally equivalent to X11 (no security prize itself). Quartz is, more or less, a development of the NeXt DPS...

    Security of VNC

VNC does not pass clear text passwords, but neither does it encrypt data transport. Personally, I don't think that is such a big deal, since the data is mostly display information (PDF for OS X). Of course, any text, including passwords, you type in will pass as well. You can ssh port forward...

    MetaFrame ?

Well, you could use VNC, although it is pretty rustic and slow. Too bad Apple has removed remote display from Quartz.

Create Soft Links From Mac OS 9?

If I remember my OS design text on unix correctly that shouldn't work. Regardless, OS 9 seems to trap the file open call on links and issue an error message.

Create Soft Links From Mac OS 9?

Your best bet is to boot off the OS X install cd, mount your OS X partition manually and do it from there. If the link isn't system related, a MacOS alias might do the trick (command-option drag the target file).

    Mac OS X VNC *CLIENT*

If it is under the GNU license, then he can't object, so long as your additions/modifications are also GPLed. Yay GNU! The GPL takes all the misery out of being a user, particularly for those of us with control issues. :-) This is a bit off topic, but does anybody know anything about TightVNC...

    Mac OS X VNC *CLIENT*

I am also interested. VNCThing is OK, but it seems to have died on the vine. I would like alternatives.

    Office.X applications activating listening ports??

Gack! How much do you know about this? Can you give me exact ranges? I have a site license, but I'll block this just on principle.

What DO you like about how OSX behaves?

Aqua gives very good feeback (bouncing icons, genie effect etc.). When I go back to GNOME I find myself straining to listen for drive grinding while apps open. Overall, the interface is pretty simple. It comes with a CLI shell, even if it isn't bash. The thing wakes up like nobody's...

    AFP WAN access?

Well, the links above should give you a pretty good idea how to do it on an ad hoc basis under OS X and MacOS. This link is a tutorial specific to VNC, although it is really the same info as the links above. http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/sshwin.html This one talks a little about...

    AFP WAN access?

I guess that depends on what you consider reasonable and transparent. It isn't particularly complicated from a unix perspective. It only takes one command and you can set it up permanently in your configuration files. FTP is a particularly difficult protocol to tunnel because the server...

    AFP WAN access?

You could get encrypted (and compressed if you want) data transport by ssh port forwarding port 548.

    Which X11?

If all you want is a pre-rolled current version of XFree86, these guys have put together a nice .pkg. http://ww1.osxgnu.org/software/Xwin/xfree86/ Likewise, the OroborusX guys have kindly .pkged their window manager here: http://julia.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/software/oroborosx/ If you...

    Which X11?

I think I just misunderstood you. Lately, I have encountered a lot of people in Mac flavored forums telling the Free Software newbies that charging money is wrong, or evena GPL violation. Being a natural butinsky, I feel obligated to intervene. The "community" suffers enough FUD without our own...

    Which X11?

Is this a personal philosophy? It doesn't jibe with the FSF free software phylosophy: Many people believe that the spirit of the GNU project is that you should not charge money for distributing copies of software, or that you should charge as little as possible -- just enough to cover the...

    10.1 server and high availability

Recently my boss asked for my recommendations on upgrading our woefully lame DNS and DHCP servers. I proposed BIND 9 and ISC/dhcpd under FreeBSD or GNU/Linux, on internally redundant Intel based servers. Pretty predictable so far. However, the mucky-mucks suddenly have their hearts set on an...
