For all of you complaining about the iPod's price

they were just demoed -- no sales until around 11/10 they said. The specs or pictures of the iPod don't do it justice. People were getting broad grins on their faces just using it. This will be something that causes considerable envy if you let someone else play with it. I won't call it...

For all of you complaining about the iPod's price

Yeah -- I'm just pointing out how expensive smallish things are that haven't ramped on the production curve. The iPaq is pretty useless as a linux box as is, but you don't see many people complaining at the $$ it takes to make it so. I actually touched an iPod yesterday and was so impressed...

    Would you buy an iPod?

I didn't think I really wanted one until I was able to play with a unit for 10 minutes. The user interface is stunningly better than any other mp3 player I've seen. I had a Nomad for awhile (it was awful - terrible battery life, glacial download speeds, poor construction and a...

For all of you complaining about the iPod's price

We have an iPaq at work with the large HD (we used an IBM 1GB microdrive which was about $600 when we bought it last Summer) and an 802.11b card. The problem is that you need a double pcmcia adapter sleeve which only cost about $230. It is really expensive to push the envelope even a bit...

    Up-To-Date Program Confirmed @ CompUSA!!!

I called the local CompUSA (Parsippany, NJ) and they said they will not be offering a free 10.1 upgrade on Saturday.. sigh

    128bit 802.11b for OS X -- current status?

Is anyone having any luck with Lucent gold cards or other 128bit 802.11b cards in Macs with 128bit encryption? All of the wireless at my company is 128bit and Apple hasn't said a word about anything beyond the "consumer grade" 40 bit encryption. thanks for any info!

    128-bit Airport Hack

Lucent had drivers that worked with gold cards for OS 9, but has stopped further development. The driver in OS X does not work with a gold card (I've tried). There are some efforts to write a driver, but one suspects that Apple will get around to a gold version one of these days as the prices...

usb audio out under X (something that works)

I have been using a Stereo-Link 1200 with excellent results. It takes usb audio from your Mac and connects directly with the audio input of your stereo. My experience with the unit is that the quality of the sound is much better than using conventional audio out (I'm measuring this with CDs...

    Open Office

I have used StarOffice over the past year on a Sun and found the experience to be disagreeable. It was buggy, had performance problems and made an effort to duplicate many things from Windows that were just irrelevant in the Unix world... I'm hoping we'll see at least a good word processor...

    Linus is a moron.

Linus has been part of the wars for at least 4 years now... He was half of a legendary netnews flamefest (note: he doesn't like microkernels)

    Linus is a moron.

I doubt that he is scared of Linux ... after all ... these OS wars are largely religious. My own experience with Linux has mirrored Ken Thompson's (see attached link) ... some of it is written well, much of it isn't. BSD varients have worked much better imho and I'm looking forward to see...

Want to know if your printer will work with OS X 10.0?

HP has released a large number of laser printer drivers -- check versiontracker. I installed the suite and it has the 2100 series (what I happen to use). The driver seems to work well. I was surprised to see them out this soon.

    IE 5.1 Stabliity Problems

The latest release of Omniweb is much more stable (and faster) than IE. iCab is also faster than IE (although I've had some stability problems). iCab and Omniweb are both works in progress and I expect great things out of them ... check them out.

    OS-X on Cube?

    >Questions: >Is the Cube stable with OSX? I read numerous posts that talk about kernel panic. I think they have bad RAM, since most also talk about installing cheap RAM. I know my Linux box and my SparcStation 10 did the same and RAM was the culprit in both cases. My boss has a cube that...

Can anyone point me to source for an audio player application? I need to see how this is done properly in an X app.

    Burning a Back-up of OS X

Scratched master discs are very rare as they are used so infrequently and modern cd mechanisms are very robust to scratches. I'm sure Apple would happily replace any defective media. I once physically lost my Photoshop master. Adobe was able to recover my sales record and fed ex'ed a copy...

Verizon Residential DSL and OS X

Verizon's residential DSL is PPPoE. I used to have Verizon (but fled some time ago due to poor performance) and never tested it with X with PPPoE. For what it is worth the release will have PPPoE so you should be able to test it next week. My guess is that it will work as at least two of...

    ipsec on OS X release

Does anyone know if Apple will support ipsec on the OS X release? ipv6 and ipsec showed up in Darwin about a month ago and it would be extra sweet to see it in production OS X -(it would certainly make tunneling more robust than using shims in Wintel machines and could be an interesting...

    OmniWeb b9 yesssss!

agreed -- Omniweb just keeps getting better and better. It now seems about as stable as the current iCab (perhaps a little better), but not quite as good as Explorer. With any luck both iCab and Omniweb will overtake Explorer. I'm very happy that we are likely to have several good browsers.
