    Volume of Apple-"Bong"

I'm not sure if this will work with a desktop, but it does work with my iBook (I think it was a new feature in one of the recent OS updates). If you turn down (or mute) the volume before turning it off, the beep will be quieter (or off) when you start it up the next time. Or you can press the...

    Safari intermitantly not loading pages/images

I have this weird issue with Safari (1.3 on OS X 10.3.9). It has been around for a while (since the previous version at least). Basically, sometimes when I click a link or type an URL in, it gives the "Can't connect to the server" error straight away (no delay whatsoever). If I click again it...

    software to make .sea

It's worth pointing out that if you're familiar with the command line (os x) you can just use a zip file and split it. Use the "make archive" command in the finder followed by: split -b xm where x is the size in megabytes you want each chunk to be. Then on the other end they can use...

    D2 on OS X

You don't have to put in the CD to view the cinematics - if you just copy the movie file into your Diablo II folder, it'll find and play them from there. You should be able to play from a Disk image... Did you make a CD/DVD Master type image? (.cdr) I did that and it worked (then again, it was...

    Your favorite free games.

Try installing via fink. Either the binaries: sudo apt-get install freeciv or from source: fink install freeciv And it worked fine for me :) (just make sure if you're playing multiplayer that you're all using the same version).

    Mac/PC networkable games

Freeciv is a free, open-source multiplayer game based on Civilisation - and it works on mac/pc/linux. Just make sure they're all running the same version. The mac one can be installed via Fink.

    BitTorrent on Linux

I'd recommend mldonkey - it's an edonkey client with plugins for Overnet, Bittorrent, Gnutella2, Soulseek, Kazaa, direct connect and Opennap. And it's available for OS X, Linux, and Windows I believe.

    simplifying commands?

Pretty much anything you can write on the command line, I believe. Oh, by the way ls -a -s -l can also be written ls -asl

Converting Powerbook DVD drive to multiregion

Try using VLC (do a search on VersionTracker). It's not a firmware hack - it's the mac port of the Linux DVD player. It simply reads the DVD as a UDF disk and decrypts it on the fly. The quality isn't quite as good as the Apple DVD player, but it works fine.

    Your favorite free games.

FreeCiv, and of course, the BEST free game ever made, Nethack

    Sparse Image

I'd guess if you just made a sparse image that's really big (say 2 gigs or whatever) then it could grow as much as it needed. But like I said, any files you store on it are going to get fragmented quite quickly. man hdiutil for more details.

    Sparse Image

I think the idea behind a sparse image is that it auto-expands up to the size of the disk you create. Example: If you create a regular 100 Mb disk image, it uses 100 Mb of your hard disk even if that disk image is empty. With a sparse image, if your 100 Mb disk image has only 5 Mb of stuff...

Fortune Cookie Mail.app bug (weirdest thing you'll see all day!)

It's the picture in the addressbook - I gave a friend of mine (in my address book) a picture, and when he sends me an email that picture shows up in it.

noobie question for you guys :)

Did you close and reopen the xterm window before trying it? Or typing rehash? If you've just installed something you need to do "rehash" to make it update the list of apps in its path..

    open ports in panther

Even using the built-in firewall (10.2) I've got open ports when I scan 127.0.0.1, and they're nothing to worry about. Mostly they're web interfaces for configuring things like CUPS. The firewall specifically allows loopback traffic, but would block it from outside. If you've got a hardware...

    Javafun

    Erm.. I think those should be semicolons in that for statement.. public class Javafun { public static void main(String[]args) { for (int i = 1; i <= 1000000; i++) { System.out.println(i); } } }

    Remotely launching an application

Couldn't you just do this? do shell script "SSH hostname; login; open "/Applications/iTunes.app"; exit" I'm not sure if that'd work, I haven't tried it. But that just basically wraps your terminal commands in a do shell script.

I copied a CD of a game onto my HD after installing it but "Please put in CD"

I've found that all (all the ones I've tried anyway) OS X games will work if you make a disk image - under OS X they apparently don't get access to the low-level CD drive, so all they can do is check for a mount in /Volumes - but if it's in Classic then it'll want the actual CD. IIRC, AoE has...

    Burn a multi-session CD and/or DVD?

You can do this in Disk Copy - Go to Burn Image and then choose the disk image you want to burn. When the burn window pops up and asks you to insert a disk, click the little triangle to get the rest of the options. The "allow additional burns" lets you make multi-session CDs. Or, if you...
