10.2.2 seeded!

Any rumours when Panther's due to hit shelves? I might not bother upgrading to 10.2 if it's going to be within 6 months...

Maybe I'll settle for 10.2.3, perhaps to be code-named Dom Perignon :p

We probably won't see 10.3 till the same time we saw Jaguar this year. Apple will probably send out beta copies out at the beginning of next year, without any major features, just to get the innards down, then at probably WWDC, they will show off the features, and then we will wait till probably August. Exactly what happened with Jaguar.

I'm gonna nip this in the bud right now. Please do a search for your question on this board. There were endless discussions on this when 10.2 was coming out.

Was 10.2, no. 10.1 was free because it was the first real and stable version of OS X that consumers believed was useful enough to install. 10.2 brings us "150 new improvements" therefore it was expensive (i.e., more than $0 :))

There's no way 10.3 will be free, because the second numeral after the first decimal is a "major revision" and major revisions are costly.

Like hazmat said, you'll find bagillons of threads about the 10.1 -> 10.2 cost issue.

Just to make sure that everyone understood what the two last posts are trying to imply: 10.3 will NOT be free.

Reminds me I never went back and said 'see?' :)

Which actually reminds me of the famous /. comment when Google published ye olde newsgroup archives: "Now you can finally go back and look who _really_ won those flamewars you left before they ended."

Since when? 8.1 was free. 8.6 was free as well. 9.1 cost $0.00

Since when has Apple charged for major updates? 10.3 will be just the same as 10.1

Expect it around March 2003

I'm still pissed that i bought X, 10.1.3 for my first go at the new operating system and months later, they expect me to buy it again. I am not impressed, I figure i will wait to buy Jaquar, or wait till the next major update. I might just wait till i get my new Ti and or Daul Processor. My system works fine, so I'm in no big rush, I can go one more year.

I love the way a thread about 10.2.2 ends up becoming a debate about 10.3 posting. But on that topic, I think we have to accept that there may be no way for us to determine what the cost (or lack thereof) of 10.3 will finally be.

Shall we place bets now? How about the fastest new Mac available at the time? :)

Very true! :)

Other people have stated that in order to avoid the branding problems with Mac OS X 11.x Apple has shifted the decimal numbers in upgrades.

MacOS X 10.1.x updates (are equivalent to previous .x updates). .1 updates are now considered to be major updates (like 8.6 -> 9.0).

Considering what apple has done with the content in each of the releases, this sounds about right to me.

Yeah I've heard something along those lines too... I heard the original excuse was that 10.1 was the first "usable" release so they just forgot 10.0 ever existed and called 10.0 -> 10.1

This should really go in café now hehe.
