10.2.3 blue screen of death ...

I am stuck at a blue screen here in os 10.2.3 when trying to start up my powerbook g4.
First it stays in the grey mode (with the apple logo) for a loooong time then it bypasses the usual login box ( I get a very short glimpse of it) and finally I am at this blue screen. The cursor is there and works, but that's it. Desktop is gone. Rebooted manually, but alas, same thing. Thinking of what could have caused this, I remembered LAst time i used the mac, all of a sudden I couldn't move a file to my HD ( pretty odd since this is something I've done a thousand times before) access was restricted. So i went to "get info" and set myself as the only one to have access to the HD. Things worked fine untill next time I tried to start the mac. I am clueless ..

Try booting off the Install CD and then Repairing Permissions through the Disk Utility. This should fix whatever you did to the hard drive.
Why are you still stuck in 10.2.3? Current version is 10.2.6.... :)

Hi aquaman...
Thanx for the answer. If you can bear with me, i'm a convertee from windows hell and so far very pleased about it, but therefore also new to the mac universe. When you say repair permissions, what do you mean ? I just ran disk utility and it says the volume HD appears to be ok. It doesn't give me a chance to repair permissions. And after restart it's the same ordeal, bypassing the login and straight to blue nothingness. Was it wrong to set me (the owner) as the only one with access to the HD? I noticed the list of users "nouser" nogroup" "guest" etc, and after the access to my HD had mysteriously changed I thought it'd be best nobody but me, myself and I had access to the HD. Is that a no no ?. Another person gave me a tip to try this:
restart into SingleUser mode (press and hold command - S at start-up)
at the prompt (when the screen stops scrolling) type:
fsck -y (let it finish repairing the volume)
mount -uw /
cd /Users
cd yourusername
mv Library Libraryold
exit

This didn't work either.

arrrgghhh :( I am turning nucking futs

I too have run into this problem. I have been on the phone with Apple care for the last couple of hours without any success. So I guess this is more of a bump to see if anyone else has had this problem and could suggest a fix.

Permissions repair fixes most thoings, but a install in place works best in this case, then install the 10.2.6 combo. I had that blue screen this year and a install in place was the only thing that worked for me.

Welcome MissMacChick!

When dlloyd suggested booting from your system disc, he was referring to your OS X install discs.

Put disc one in, restart your computer while holding down the c key (c for "boot from Cd")

After it boots, look for an option to "Repair Permissions". Incorrectly set permissions can seriously mess up OS X. I don't know exactly where the option is from the install disc boot, but I've heard that it is available there.

(Some people recommend repairing permissions periodically. Disc Utility in /Applications/Utilities will do this for you _after_ you get your machine working.)

Please post again if I haven't made this clear enough (at 1:00 a.m. no less).

Doug
