10.2 won't install on iMac 266

I just got the OS X 10.2 Jaguar CD's and it won't install on my iMac 266 (64mb RAM, 6gig HD). I've had no issues with my meager RAM before. Previous versions of OSX have specified 128mb, but it's worked fine so far.

The problem is this: the installer works fine until just after selecting the primary language, at which point it says "Reading packages" and cycles around and around forever. There is a heap of CD activity going, but nothing happens - I've left it for hours. The whole installer seems very slow before that point as well - it has lots of CD activity for very little on the screen.

Anyone know what's happening?

I would have to agree. RAM is pretty much your only option at this point; try to get a 128 meg stick put in for you (Installing RAM into one of the older iMacs is a nightmare for the average consumer).

Minimum Hardware requirements state 128Mb memory.

You do need more. (TIP get as much as possible 128 Mb v slow!)

I agree.....the minimum you should try is 128....even at that rate, it'll be crying for more. Just throw in a pc100 256 so-dimm in, and you should be fine. Well... more better (i know....double positive....*l*) than it is now.

As for your hdd space....6 gigs, huh? how much do you actually have free? Cause Jaguar's gonna need like 1 gig for it's own.

If it's running OS X now....i don't see a real need to upgrade to jaguar if you have a faster mac aswell. If it's your only mac, then ya might as well try it...just hope you didn't shell out the $130us for it to use on your ibook.....

;)

You're in for a shock if you try to put a 256 meg stick in... it won't take it. ;) Try for two 128 meggers.

And the recommended free HD space for Jag is 3 gigs. I would suggest a larger HD, but you have to COMPLETELY DISMANTLE the computer to do so. Literally. I bet a trained profesional might end up screwing it up.

Good luck, though.. I'm speaking from experience, you see. I had an iMac 333 Rev. C.

Whoops....my bad. *l* well...however he gets it up to 256...just do it. *l*

When I upgraded my 10.1.5 to jaguar, it mentioned 1 gig...but I suppose that was for the upgrade. That, or I didn't read it properly, when I installed it at 4:45am. :D

My friend has the original ibook, and wants to change his hdd too. I suggested iPoint Computing in Toronto, I know they are alright. I've seen a few techs add hdds to laptops, and it's like brain surgery. *l*
