10.3.9. server login trouble

I updated my OS X Server on a powermac G5 from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 . Since then noone can login other than the account that did the update. all other login tries are getting "user not known to the underlying authentication module". Furthermore (and probably related to that) noone can login to imap and mail cannot be delivered to anyone causing the error message: "Mail is not configured for this user".

All that was working perfectly before this upgrade. Does anyone have an idea? At this point my server is basically useless.
 
Talked to Apple support:
The 10.3.9 is - as known - doing some major patching on the LDAP server. After everything was applied the upgrade missed to re-add the local LDAP server in the authentication mechanism (Applications - Utilities - Directory Access - Tab authentication). After I re-added the local LDAP server to that everything was back to normal.
