404 error message after changes to my web site

Hi all,

I created my web pages using iWeb on a Mac OS X, version 10.5.4 and posted them on the internet via hosting company. The pages looked good and were readily viewable whenever I visited.

Recently, I made some changes to a couple of my pages, as well as adding a new page. Then re-uploaded the changed pages and the new page, as well as the index.html page to the relevant folders on my web server.

Since then, however, I've not been able to access my pages - Google or other search engines keep reporting the dreaded error 404 message.

Does anyone know why this would be and how to fix this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have got the same problem and asked mobileMe-Service. They told me to change my A.Adress at the autoDNS-Settings (Host-Europe) and I did so.
Second: I was told to reset SAFARIs cache + cookies - and I did so.
For some times that worked. But now the same problems with the following error-message reappear:
"Sorry but we can't find the iWeb page you've requested. It's possible that:
· The address was entered incorrectly. Check your spelling and try again.
· The .Mac member of this name has either created a page and removed it or has never published an iWeb site.
· There is no .Mac member of this name. If you'd like this member name for yourself, sign up for a .Mac account right now and have your own iWeb site in minutes".

Hi Charly,
But I don't have an account with mobileMe. I'm using a third-party web hosting company for my web page. I only created the pages on my MAC (iWeb).
Also, I've already emptied my browser cache but this didn't help.

Are all the URLs to the pages you open the? Has any path changed? Or even as little as apitalization of the URL?

What happens if you type in a page you know exists in addition to the URL?

Like so:

Code:
http://www.somesite.com/[b]index.html[/b]
or...
Code:
http://www.somesite.some/somesubfolder/[b]somepage.html[/b]

I've not made any changes to the URL; I simply made content changes to one page and added a new page. iWeb (Mac OS X software) then automatically creates a new index.html page, as well as automatically creating a URL for the additional page created. I uploaded all 3 pages: the new index.html, the page with the changed content and the new page.
From my search on the internet, I noticed that "broken URLs" seems to be a common problem for people who update their web pages....
Can you help or point me in the right direction?
Would be much appreciated.

Hi,
inserting the url in SAFARI will produce the same error,
but sometimes, logging in on my mobileMe account these pages can be opened.

Hi Artemisia,
are you able to access the server where the files from your upload are located?
I have not got any experience with other providers but apple/mac/me. So I do not know
whether there wil be displayed a menue on your server like in mobileMe. There all my sites are presented separately. I just have to click on the presented url and than the site opens (or sometimes not).
