500mhz dual USB iBook won't boot from cd

So I bought a 500mhz dual USB iBook from ebay last week and I've had it a few days now, and I must say, I wasn't expecting the thing to be as slow as it is. Youtube videos are slow, maybe 1 frame every 2 seconds. I was kinda expecting that, but what I wasn't expecting was the slow web browsing. I would like to upgrade to Panther (Jaguar 10.2.8 currently installed) so I can use newer browsers, but I can't get it to boot from the cd. I've tried nearly every key combination but nothing seems to work. The cdrom drive does work as I can read files on the disc just fine.

You do realize your computer is nearly 10 years old, right? Not quite sure what you were expecting...

But back to your problem. Where did you get the Panther CD? Grey disc or black disc?

Ram? Free HD space?

You can try to boot from a CD one of three ways:

1) Insert CD, reboot computer, hold down 'c' key as the computer boots
2) Insert CD, reboot computer, hold down the 'option' key as the computer boots, then select the Mac OS X Install CD from the list of bootable icons
3) Insert CD, wait for it to mount, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, select Mac OS X Install CD, reboot computer

Do none of these work for you?

Are those Panther discs black in color?
Gray or any mention of any specific Mac model = will not work.
