Does ANYONE know if I can get a 1280x720 at 60htz ( HDTV resolution of 720p) out of the new powermacs?? is this resolution supported by the drivers of the NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti card???

Thanks!! :)

Sneaky sneaky sneaky... bumping your own post farther up the list to try and get a reply, eh?

Anyways, to answer your question, I don't know. I've got an old Rage 128 that'll go up to 1280x1024@60Hz, so that's a better resolution than you're looking for on a much older card -- I would assume you could get at better resolution out of the GeForce Ti, but I don't know if you can get the EXACT resolution you're looking for. I don't know much about HDTV anyways, or the NVidia cards for that matter. I saw how desperate you were for replies so I thought I'd give you one.

Hey ElDiabloConCaca, :)
Yea, I am kickin the idea around for using a powermac as a DVD player, iTunes ( for all music to the main stereo ) and possibly even a TV tuner ( with EyeTV or Formac )

then control it all from the couch with a wireless keyboard and a GYRO mouse...

The idea is called a HTPC ( Home Theater PC ) sadly, windows has more hardware and software options right now for HTPC, but I just love OSX too much to degrade to XP for the setup.. and besides, I can pretty much do everything I am thinking about already, just a few details to iron out.. ( like getting 720p out of the DVI on the Nvidia.. ) the other thing is for apple to let DD-AC-3( Digital Surround) to pass out of their DVD player ( you can get AC-3 with a product called SONICA and a Software DVD player over at midiman )
http://www.midiman.net/products/consumer/sonica.php

the idea is to send a HDTV signal to a BIG HDTV display with DVI input.. ( there is more and more sets coming out )

OR perhaps, get a PROJECTOR with DVI input and do the same thing.. ( of course the projector would probably accept other resolutions, but for the setup I have been kickin around, I need 720p DVI output of the powermac..... )

HDTV is 720p-progessive or 1080i-interlaced

be cool to have everything in one box..

ok, according to this, 1280x720 is NOT supported by GeForceTi card...

now.. don't suppose there is someone that has made a really cool utility that can allow me to set custom resolutions on the mac?? there is one for Windoze here:
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm

I did find someone who does something close, but short of getting a hold of a powermac and trying it, I don't think it will work..

it is called SwitchRes... but I don't think you can use resolutions that aren't supported......

anyone?? I am stumped as how to approach this........

cclear,

To answer the first question, the Nvidia video card you have will support 1280x720. The problem is in OS X. I currently have a HTPC running on Windoze XP using most of tools that you list. I have a Sony 9000, 50" Widescreen monitor that I use a custom resolution to enable widescreen using Powerstrip. I also use gyration keyboard and mouse that you mention (which are excellent).

I also have a G4 that I want to turn into the HTPC for a Sony VPL-11HT HDTV projector. The ideal resolution for that projector is 1368x768 running at 56hz. I have done it from my PC with an Nvidia card, but am unable to do it from my Mac. I have a Radeon 8500 that can surely output that resolution but am unable to select it.

I have sent Entech an email informing them there would be a lot of interest from the Mac community of a port of powerstrip to OS X, but have yet to hear back from them. SwitchRes won't work as it doesn't allow you to create your own custom resolutions. For me, any frequency above 60hz will "lock" the projector into 4:3 mode. I can sucessfully project resolutions (up to 1920x1080) but the monitor locks into 4:3 mode and the output looks all scrunched.

Does anybody out there know how to hack OS X to get a custom resolution?

cclear, if you have figured anything out in the past month, please let me know. I really want to get my Mac to be a HTPC.

btw, do you have the sonica? I just ordered it yesterday. if you do, what have your experiences been? I read that Apple DVD player doesn't yet do AC-3 pass through so you have to use VLC until Apple changes their player, which I also heard that they are doing.
