A PC user has been pressing buttons on my mac! help!

Hi

Having some real annoying issues with my macbook. My brother was borrowing it for a while, he is a pc user and insists on using every keyboard shortcut under the sun. He has pressed something (or many things!?) that have changed some basic but essential (for me) settings.

Now in any program, like photoshop for example, when i click file and open, the window that pops up is completely different - the icons are massive and wide apart, and it wont let me simply click on 'desktop'. I'd have to click back a few times until i navigate back to the desktop! how weird is that?

Also, i can no longer click on the tab buttons in firefox and hit the left and right arrows to switch between the tabs. It simply wont let me select the tab!

Seriously frustrating, and any help would be appreciated!

Cheers
Thom

Start with restoring default setting for your mouse and keyboard:
1)System Preferences
2)Keyboard & Mouse
3)Clic "keyboard shortcuts"
4)Then, Restore Defaults.

Hi Thom,

Can you not access the VIEW button on the top tab and change the view to LIST instead of icon.. then go to SHOW VIEW OPTIONS and set the size and spacing of them?
In Firefox have you gone into preferences and checked to see if any of your original settings have been altered, especially the TAB section.

cheers for the quick replys

yeah i tried resetting the keyboard and mouse settings, unfortunately this didn't make a difference.

I can change it to 'list' when i click file and open, but the default every time i do it goes back to icon view. (and the wide spaces between each one etc). There isn't an option to change the view settings in the 'open' windows of the various programs.

Ive tried changing the view settings in finder, and i get it all looking how it should for every other window. But when i click file and open in any program, the window goes back to massive icons again...

(i was hoping this would be one of those things that simply requires checking/unchecking a box somewhere... sigh)

Don't let a windows user use your account.
Guest account or a parental control account, but NEVER yours.
(ha. while writing this, entertaining to have a cat walk on my keyboard...)

tell me about it.
i really am stuck, its made basic navigation around my files an absolute nightmare.

any more suggestions?
i think im gonna have to re-install OSX...

If the Windows user is also a Mac user, even then he'd need a user of his own.

Hmm.. so the icon thing seems to happen on all applications. I wonder if he'd by mistake have set something on in Universal Access (sys.prefs).
Or some other odd keyboard shortcut.. not sure how some of these would show in practice but I guess worth a try?
Also very unlikely that this view problem would affect any other users so reinstall is an overkill.

That windows user deserves a screenshot of his desktop, placed as the desktop image, and have all the junk from his desktop removed. :)

You should clearly do the same on that peecee. Press every imaginable keyboard combination.
Or some fun with Windows accessibility shortcuts...
* Press SHIFT five times: Toggles StickyKeys on and off
* Press down and hold the right SHIFT key for eight seconds: Toggles FilterKeys on and off
* Press down and hold the NUM LOCK key for five seconds: Toggles ToggleKeys on and off
* Left ALT+left SHIFT+NUM LOCK: Toggles MouseKeys on and off
* Left ALT+left SHIFT+PRINT SCREEN: Toggles high contrast on and off

How about going into accounts in system preferences and creating a new user account for yourself (with administrative function)? Copy your home folder files from your old account to the new account. Then purge the old account.

haha some evil ideas coming through here... i love it
