Acrobat Reader 9, Mac OS X User Accounts

I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.6. I've installed Acrobat Reader 9. It works fine in my primary (admin) user account, but in my other user accounts it shuts down immediately upon startup. This happens on my iMac and MacBook (both Intel-based).

Any suggestions appreciated.

That could be a limitation of the Adobe software, and non-admin accounts, I guess.
Are you able to do what you need with pdf files using the built-in Preview app? There will be no such limitation with Preview, which will do most of what Adobe Reader provides.

You don't need Adobe Reader on 10.5.x machines anymore and you can delete that bloatware. Just follow these steps to have PDFs viewable in Safari.

1. Quit Safari.
2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
3. Type (or copy) the line : defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool NO

If you want only to download the PDFs (and use preview directly) instead of them appearing in the browser window(you still get a chance to download it directly to Preview) then copy the same line above and just replace the NO with a YES. It is that simple.

Thanks, folks. I do need Reader since the file I need to read is encrypted. Only Reader 9 works (this is the PMBOK from the Project Management Institute). I understand that the work-around is to read it in my admin account, and use Preview in the others. Interestingly, if I give my working account admin privileges, it still doesn't work there. Do you know how to report this problem?? I can't figure out how to make Adobe aware of this.

I think it has to do with bad programming on Adobe's part. Check the permissions on the program so that all the users have privilege to the program.

OK, thanks. I've just tried changing the user permission settings in Reader's preferences, and I've tried giving the other accounts admin privileges. No joy. Guess I'll stick with the work-arounds until Adobe releases an update.

Thanks.

Also if you haven't got any really custom permission try to open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and use that to "Repair Permissions". It could help.
