Add Fax modem (Panther)

Hello all.

I have installed Panther ona n iBook 00MHz and a b/w G3 successfully, and am liking it. However.

I played around with the built in fax software and in the process deleted the "Internal modem" item in the Fax List window o the Print Center application.

Problem is that now I can't find a way to recreate it. There is no "Add Fax" menu item like there is for printers. Deleting the device in the Network prefs and creating it again does not work either. Deleting any preferences files with "fax" in the filename does nothing but delete the settings in the Fax pane of the "Print & Fax" item of the Preferences.

This is reproducible, as I have managed to delete and not find any way to recreate the fax modem thing on both the iBook and G3.

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this? I'm pretty much stumped. And I would like to not have to install Panther again.

Thanks,

_Lasar

Have you tried creating a new user, go to the Fax list, see if internal modem exists under a different user?

I have, now. The modem is gone here, too. So it appears as if I have fully deleted the setup somehow.

I have not seen the insternal modem in my fax list before now.

I tried a test, chose to print a document, clicked on the Fax button in the print window, which took me straight to the Fax window (to provide addressing and modem selection, and now I have the internal modem in the Fax list!

Does this work for you?

I click on the Fax button in the print screen, get the fax screen with "No fax selected" in the fax popup. When I select "Show Fax List..." I get the empty fax list and no way to add a fax.

When you select Show Fax list you should only see your internal modem there. If you have a page open to fax, go to Print and click the Fax button, that should give you the window to fill in TO; -Subject: -etc. It should show the drop down for your internal modem.

If you really did delete the software, you'll have to reinstall 10.3. I don't remember seeing an option to do a custom install just for the Fax software.

In the Popup it says "No Fax Selected" and below that (in the popup) "Show Fax List".
I didn't delete anything by hand, I just went to the Fax List (in the Printer Setup Utility), selected the Internal Modem and hit the delete button.
Which should be nice and well, except I don't have an "Add" button like there is for the printers.

I just deleted the 'internal modem' from the Fax List, tried the Fax button, and got the Add Fax window with 'no Fax selected'. so duplicated what you see (no internal modem) then closed all apps, including the Print setup utility. Then reopened a document, chose print, hit the Fax button, got a window saying 'creating new printer', then got the New Fax Printer, with a menu selction for Internal Modem, so it came back immediately. Have you tried a simple reboot of your system?

I tried this twice, works each time to create a new fax printer. Looks like it's pretty difficult to actually remove the software that's needed, (unless you're logged in as a Root user???) Just deleting the internal modem from the Fax List should easily be fixed. My modem is in fact disabled through the Network pref pane, but the Fax software picks it up immediately, even test sent a fax, works smooth (although I don't really have any need for faxing, except once in about 5 years)

DeltaMac: I'll try again in a few seconds, but I've clicked around for two days now and have rebooted in that time, too. To no avail. I just don't get the "add new fax" screen. Maybe it hasn't been completely deleted, just partly. I don't know.

Nope, no go. I never get to the Add Fax screen, no matter what I do. I can pretend to send a fax when I enter some number as the recipient, but then I immediately get a generic "Error while sending fax" error, and that is that.
Apparently I've run into a bug or something. Seems like I'd have to re-install the system to get this back..

Log out and back in as another user, set up a new user if you have to. Then try faxing something from TextEdit.

I created two new users by now, and both exhibit the exact same behaviour. I get the "fax" screen with "No fax selected" in the popup and going to the Fax list gives me an empty window, too.

The next step, I believe, would be to reinstall the system. You must have deleted something as root if the same thing happens with a new user.

I'm quite sure I haven't. I have deleted Fax preferences (to no avail), but nothing more. Actually I couldn't find anything much to delete with "fax" in the filename.
And I'm proficient enough in computers to not accidentally delete important things (most of the time).

The only file I do find is /Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.plist which appears to be the settings from the control panel for receiving faxes, and nothing more. Could anybody check if there are any other files (fax drivers maybe) that I don't have?

This com.apple.print.FaxPrefs.plist is also the only fax file I have on either of my Panther installs.

It doesn't. Only my printer shows up.

However it looks like I could add it through this interface. Only I don't know the DeviceURI (if one exists) that I'd have to enter.

To restate:
You deleted the internal modem from the Fax List (No deletions of other files, only deleted from the Fax List)
When you choose Print now, you get the print window (with the print options available) Click on Fax... you should see the Fax options window (won't have that as a title, but shows various Fax options, with a drop-down list next to Modem, and SHOULD say internal modem now.
There's no way that I have found to add an item to the fax list (there would only ever be one item in that list, unless you have a 2nd modem, which I think would be very unusual, as well as difficult to setup), if the internal modem is not in the list (it's blank) then you should see 'Adding printer' moments after clicking on the Fax... button (That's what you SHOULD see) Of course, it adds a printer, which is your internal modem (the internal modem acts as a printer, which is why after adding that, it will show up in the http://127.0.0.1:631/printers as another printer.
If your system refuses to add the inernal modem when selecting 'Fax...' from the print window, (I have deleted the internal modem from the Fax List 10-15 times now, and the modem returns every time I click Fax... (says 'Creating Printer', and shows up in the Fax List immediately. There is not an 'Add Fax' Window, only a momentary 'creating printer' that lasts about 2 seconds and is gone. Works every time (for me)

If you really need the fax function (which seems to be internal to the CUPS software) for more than a curiosity (that's my level), then reinstall Panther. :(
