I just upgraded to system 10.4.8 and now my Macpower Icecube USB 2.0 external drive is no longer recognized. It worked fine up until now. Disk Utility sees it, but the repair is grayed out. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 sees it as an uninitialized disk and it passes the Read/Write test. I tried mounting it with iMount, but it doesn't see it. I tried cmd-option-O-F and then:

reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

-This didn't work either. Am I going to have to wipe my data and reformat? I really want to keep that data.

Did it require any special drivers for it to work or did it just work out of the box? When you performed the update, did you have the USB drive plugged in? When updating, it's best to only leave the keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected and then reconnect everything after the update is successful.

Try reinstalling the 10.4.8 update using the Combo Updater for your CPU architecture (PPC or Intel). Just download it from Apple.com.

It worked out of the box. Their website also still states that no driver is necessary. I did not have it plugged in when I did the update.

OK, try reinstalling 10.4.8 using the Combo Updater. See if that resolves it. Something migfht have gotten borked in the previous update, which happens if you're using Software Update to update your OS (doesn't always happen, but it's been known to happen).

Unplug the external, then reset your PRAM. Plug the drive back in after the restart.

If this doesn't fix it, try and cable or open /Applications/Utilties/Disk Utility and run a check on the drive if it is recognized.

I did that and no change. I notice that when I look at the drive in Disk Utility, it mentions the following:

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported
Partition Scheme: Unformatted

It won't let me repair or verify the drive.

What does SMART status mean? Is this suddenly not supported with the new OS upgrade?

It looks like there are no partitions on your drive. If you had important data on there, you may want to see a professional data restorer. If not, try re-formating in the "Erase" tab, or formating in the "Partition" tab.
You could also try looking at it with a different system.

I have just had this problem too. The External drive, which previously worked fine, has suddenly been grayed out and is not writable. I can't mount the disk.

All of the appropriate actions I could take in Disk Utility are grayed out, so I can't run first aid or anything else.

this is a Windows format FAT 32 Seagate drive. Could that be the problem?
