Please advise.

I have a G5 and am trying to upgrade 1st from 10.3.9 to 10.4. Bought install discs off ebay. They are 2 gray emac Mac O Install 10.4 discs and came sealed.

Getting error message at the beginning of install. "Alert, software cannot be installed on this computer"

Did I buy the wrong system upgrade? Do I need to format my hard drive or something?

Thanks!

Sadly- You were tricked.

Any Grey discs are system specific- Although they can be altered- To work for any, But it does require alot of skills working in the terminal and alot of plist files.

I've never done it, Because i always buy from Apple.

You should have bought Leopard from apple for 129- You spent pretty close to that on tiger.

OS X Retail Full system install disks are BLACK, the Grey disks are all machine specific as stated by Satcomer.
If you can find a disk for the very same model as your computer then you'd probably be good to go, otherwise you'll get the error message that you are currently getting.

Do not take this as a "HA!HA! You FOOL!" but you have to read the fine print:

If you have an eMac and are looking to upgrade to Tiger, this is the software for you. As a bonus, get the most stable and fastest iLife yet (especially suited to G4s), along with Quicken & AppleWorks too! Compatible with any eMac.

This is a VERY easy mistake to make. I nearly missed it and thought you would have a good case against the seller. You may still be able to negotiate something.

I believe This is more what you are looking for. That is not an endorsement of the seller.

I was able to find 10.3 and 10.4--years back--from Mac dealers for about $30 each--all Retail. This was for my Ancient Widdle Pismo. Of course, Leopard was already out!

Best of luck!
