Hi, Macbook pro 2.4ghz, 4Gb ram, V10.6.4

I am experience repeated problems of apps closing in scenarios similar to this...

I leave 1 or more apps running, come back the next morning and wake the screen and find all apps closed.

Sometimes I can return and find all apps open as you might expect, but often they are all closed - never only some closed - all of nothing.

I have tried disabling sleep and leaving it on mains power - but this make no difference.

Any ideas - thanks in advance ?

It sounds like your system is restarting. Next time you find everything closed, start Applications / Utilities / Console and read the Console Messages to see what it's been doing.

Thanks Whitehill - I've had a look and found dozens of these in DATABAE SEARCHES - CONSOLE MESSAGES:

28/10/2010 11:29:50 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.netauth.sysagent[58261]) Exited with exit code: 255

And literally hundreds of these in DATABASE SEARCHES - ALL MESSAGES:

28/10/2010 12:06:52 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/OSServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/CSConfigDotMacCert[58299] MDS Error: unable to create user DBs in /var/folders/gK/gKMpRE4GFQmur6Fixoer6U+++TI/-Caches-//mds

I don't know what they mean though - any ideas ?

No. But I would recommend that you repair permissions on your system disk. Run Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility to do that.

Well, you were right to suggest that - looks like just about everything that could be wrong is - going to take 30mins to repair.

ElDiabloConCaca - thanks for that - I have a few of those messages which I will ignore.

And I think you have cracked my problem - I had my computer set to log out after 60 mins of inactivity - doh ! I don't remember setting this though - perhaps it is a default.

Many thanks.
