hello ,
I just got new Altec Atp3 subwoofer speakers .
3 days I'm trying to hear something from them. i connected all the cables the right way as mentioned in the manual etc...should not be any prblem with hearing music from them , but probably Mac OSX system doesn't recognize them as my external speaker system .

may it happen ?

p.S i checked all the connections , even the system preferences . the speakers just not mentioned or recognized in the output volume preferences of my MACosx system. It's total new PC and the speakers and i just don't know what to do ...the apeakers make noise , but no music .

please help me :)

Thanks a lot !

Do you see the power light on the right satellite speaker?

Is the green connector from the sub-woofer plugged into the computer, and make sure it is the audio out, or headphone connector, and NOT the audio in

If everything seems OK for the connections, and the speaker power is on, go to your System Preferences/Sound pane. Click on the Output tab. You should see Internal speakers, and you should ALSO see external. Click on that external selection in that list. You can click on the Alerts tab, and change the drop-down to Internal Speakers, unless you want the system alerts to go through your external speakers.
Try your speakers out, and enjoy!

Thank you for replying ,

really appreciate it !

i have checked and done all these steps ,

but the thing is that the speakers are not recognized in my system preferences/sound/output. i could choose only one option -only Internal speakers !

so what can i do to make my computer recognize the ATP3 speakers in the system as External , so i can choose that option ?

Thanks a lot !!!

Are you sure that you are plugging the sub-woofer into the audio-out, or the one marked for headphones? Either should work, and even if the Sound pref pane does not show the external speakers, you should get sound out through the speakers....
Have you tried any other speakers, or any kind of headphones plugged into your Mac?

Which Mac model do you have?

Something your can try, that could help (sounds strange, but try it!)
Start GarageBand, and then Quit GarageBand - then try the Sound pref pane to see if there is any change in the Sound output.

hello again ,

thank you again for the support and trying to help.
but now i'm more confused than before ...

1. i have checked the connections and the speakers are in the right place- speakers output (not the headphone).
2. i have tried to open the "garage band" and then quit it - and still no change in the preferences .
3. i have a pair of another speakers from ALTEC - they have been connected to the computer and i couldn't see them in my preferences as well - not recognized !
moreover, when i have connected my mp3/mp4 player to the ATP3 speakers i could hear some kind of music played - although with some noises . basicly i assume that the speakers are not made for listening music from mp players . but still i just tried to find out whether the problem is in the computer output connection or the speakers.

So ,
maybe the problem is just in the output that doesn't work???

and maybe i have to replace this computer with another MAC
the model is , by the way, Mac osx 10.4.7

P.S- regarding the headphone output - i have tried to use headphones through it - and this output works . just additonal info...i don't know if it may help solving the problem .

Although it's nice to know the version of the operating system, I would like to know what Mac model you have (such as iMac, PowerMac G3, PowerBook, MacBook, etc.). You can be as detailed as you want, including processor speed, or other physical characteristics of your Mac.

all right ,:)

so I have :
iMac,
1.83 ghz intel core duo 2 processor
2mb shared l2 cache
512 mb of 667mhz ddr2 sdram, supports up to 2gb
160gb serial ata hard drive
intel gma 950 graphics processor ....
audio : built-in stereo speakers, integ. mic, optical digital audio input/audio line in, optical digital audio output/headphone out

etc...

.........hope it may help

thank you

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. I am working on a new IMac 20" - and my external speaker system (Logitech Z3) was working perfectly on OSX 10.4.7. I have upgraded my system to 10.4.8 and now the speakers are not recognised by the Mac. In the Utilities Profiler I only have built in speakers. If I plug the external speakers into the headphone socket, its registering as headphones and I can listen to the music over my Headset plugged into thhe Logitech soundcontroller. Unfortunately putting it back into the external output socket its not registering as external audio.

I have tried another speaker set and they are also not working. The Logitech system is also not faulty as it plays on my other PC.

Some help would be greatly appreciated.
