I upgraded to Jaguar about a week ago, and I've noticed that the cooling fan on my Pismo never throttles down anymore, even if the computer is in idle. It'll shut down when it goes to sleep, but when it's on and just sitting there doing nothing, the cooling fan is working overtime to keep it cool.
With OS 9, the fan would throttle down when it wasn't doing anything stressful. During those moments, it'd be as quiet as a mouse.
But now the unending noise of the fan is rather annoying. Hell, it's approaching torture on my nerves, the same way a leaky faucet can drive someone crazy. Plus, it's murder on the battery's charge if all I'm doing is typing a document. All those rpm's its turning sucks power big time.
I've got 192 MB of RAM, but I've ordered a 512MB upgrade which should be here in a couple of days. Will more RAM help? I imagine it would help with battery life by cutting down on hard disk access for virtual memory, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how it could help the system keep cool during idle moments.
Has anyone else noticed this and has there been a solution? I've been googling the Internet like mad trying to find similar cases, but I've had no luck. Maybe putting some Artic Silver thermal compound between the CPU and the fan? Or could it even be dust that's clogging up the vents, so I need to get some compressed air and blow it out? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and get one of those $300 G4 500 CPU upgrades that you can get from PowerLogix? Help!
